Major advice

  • I'm going back to school undeclared this fall. Don't really have a passion for any career specifically. I just want to get paid at this point. In the opinion of TBB, what are some hot career fields of today and their corresponding major? Something with stability, high pay, benefits, etc. Thanks in advance.

  • Engineering or accounting are always good choices.

  • I'm considering different fields of engineering at the moment. And I said I am undeclared, but finacial aid made me declare something, so I'm currently declared as Business Admin. If I stay on the track in business admin, after my sophomore year, I will be majoring in Accounting. I've always been good with numbers, so I have been leaning towards these fields. Also, I'm interested in working in some field of IT potentially. But I don't know anybody that does this for a living, so I have no feel for earning potential or what specific IT field to get into, like IS or Networking, etc.

  • You won't have any problem finding a job in accounting when you are done. As long as you like accounting you'd be in good shape. If you're not sure about that field see if you can get in touch with someone in the industry and talk to them about it. My brother works for one of the big firms and always hypes it up.

  • I have two friends that graduated about a year ago with degrees in mechanical engineering from UA. Both were hired immediately, and they are both making a pretty penny. Granted, one of them is a certified genius, but still....

  • To tell you the truth, mostly what you need is a diploma to get a good job. Now of course there will be certain jobs that require certain degrees but as long as you dont graduate as a physical education or education major you should be fine

Yeah, disregard this. It's really horrible advice. I also think you're going to be in trouble if you're picking a major/field just based on wanting to "get paid." You will be beat out by people who actually have a passion for what they're doing. I would not go back to school unless you have a real desire to pursue something in particular.

There are a lot of people with diplomas who are working BS jobs that they're theoretically way overqualified for simply because they believed that piece of paper would make everything fall into place for them. As a 2009 graduate, I can say many people I know are swamped with debt to pay off and have no strong job prospects to speak of.

As most have mentioned here, engineering, IT, and accounting are the three best bets, but nothing is a given with the way the economy remains in such bad shape.
