Malcolm Gladwell: College Football Should Be Banned

  • sf2k4 said...

For a poor, underprivileged black teenager living in a terrible neighborhood and on food stamps? I'd like to hear one option comparable to what playing CFB offers.

Work 2 jobs and pay your way through college.

It might be difficult but if the health concerns are that great to you then the extra hard work shouldn't bother you.

I didn't say the other options were as attractive. I simply said they existed. You want to paint this as a proposition of either playing college football or joining a gang. It's idiotic to think those are the only two options available.

You do realize that if you graduate high school and are poor the government pays for you school right? Because I get the feeling a lot of liberals don't understand this. Growing up poor is not an excuse for not going to college.

Don't need to. The government pays for poor students to go to school, has for years now.

I am aware of this. Just making a point really.

If someone wants to go to school they will go to school. Regardless of football.

    These kids have a choice.

  • Gladwell: "A better question is whether it is ethical to WATCH football. That's a harder question."

Judging from his pics, this little limp wristed freak needs to preach about the morality of watching two men plug each other..... I don't care what he watches, but questioning the ethics of watching football is hilarious.

Exactly the argument that CFB is the only way these kids can go to college is absurd. I always smh at some of my HS school classmates that didn't go to college "Because they couldn't afford it" blows my mind.

  • So what I gathered from this thread is that LIberals do not like Football(which is false). Only Black kids are poor, and cannot afford to go to School(Which is also false).

Obviously not all liberals dislike football. But lets be honest here, you will never find a conservative who wants to abolish football.

Well, to be fair, it's also idiotic to think you can convince a kid from a bad background that working two jobs and potentially supporting your family and making little to no money is a better idea that playing football, regardless of health risks, for the (slim) chance to become rich.

You're going to come back and say, "Well, his fault for being stupid." It's not stupidity, it's desperation.

Well, 14% of white Americans are poor while 36% of black Americans are. You might not want to hear it, but it doesn't make it racist.

Exactly. They get a scholarship worth a couple hundred thousand dollars.

I would have loved to have such an opportunity.

You didn't generate your university $80-100 million annually though, did you?

I did a quick google search and found that the University of Florida costs about $4,300 in tuition per year for an in-state kid and $24,000 per year for an out of state kid. Probably anywhere from 65-80% of the 85 scholarship kids on the UF roster are in-state kids.

For arguments sake even if you took the largest number and added it by 4 years, $24,000 x 4 = $96,000 x 85 = $8.16 million over 4 years or $2.04 mil per year. Well, Florida football pumps in about $80-$100 million per year annually.

Some of these kids are flat out getting screwed over. Open up the NFL and let them be draft eligible and let the NFL pay for it's farm system like the NHL and MLB do. But no...you people would rather let the NFL/NCAA work in cohesion to keep the system rigged just because you like watching college football.
