Marijuana Legalization: Yes/No? Why/Why Not?

  • steveschneider said...

No, dangerous drug and detrimental to peoples mental health. I think its a far more dangerous drug than most of the pro pot people. Do we really want to make it more readily available?

Out of curiosity, why is it dangerous? Do we have any studies that show that it's detrimental to people's mental health?

Yes for medical purposes, no for recreational uses. Why? Because the effects will likely be dulled down tremendously and large industries will manufacture it in a similar fashion to how cigarettes are made and possibly have similar additives as cigarettes have.

    I Disagree...respectufully

When the cigarette industry was created it was homogenized by OUR government (and the powerful tabacco industry). The tail wagged the dog and chemicals were addded to create a product that was more harmful.

I've got a great idea... Don't do that this time.

Cannibis is all natural and you can grow in your backyard. You don't need Phillip Morris and RJ Reynolds to manufacture this for us. You need Bill & Ted.

But... even if the sale of marijuana becomes industrilized. I can't imagine in a million years that it will create a company like Phillip Morris. It will create more companies like StarBucks.

Where do you think marijuana smokers are going to go to make a purchase? A place that has a wide variety of all natural product or some homogenized industrilized corporation?

If it's going to be legal, you can't have people just growing it in their backyard. You'll have a license to grow it and a load of other legal work to go along with it. That isn't my opinion, that's what the government would do if marijuana was legal.

  • Legalize. Duh. Make it for 21 and over and enforce underage with 1,500 then 5,000 then 10,000 fines. Don't imprison just keep fining and giving 100s of hours of community service.

I can give all the age old arguments but its a joke. Tax it up to its current prices and put that money directly into education. Not marijuana education. STEM programs.

Why not. You can make beer in your kitchen.

It may not be legal to sell it unless you have the correct license, but WE have to make sure it is legal to grow for your own use.

I think it's dangerous because it hampers the brains development and can lead to an early onset of mental illnesses.

How about YOU tell me a constitutional reason why marijuana should be legal.

Nothing conclusive, but from Mayo clinic:

"There are also links between marijuana and other mental health conditions. Marijuana use may trigger schizophrenia or detachment from reality (psychosis) in people who are at higher risk of psychosis. The symptoms of diagnosed psychotic illness and its course may be aggravated if marijuana use continues. There is also some evidence that teenagers who attempt suicide may be more likely to have used marijuana than those who have not made an attempt. As with marijuana use and depression, more research is needed to better understand these associations. "

My one argument for marijuana legalization is that you could cut profits from the mexican drug cartels by making marijuana legal in the United States.

You can't distribute that beer legally though. One of the major incentives for legalizing marijuana is the crazy money the government could make. So why would the government want everyone growing their own weed and the government being left out on all of the possible money?

Because it's convenient and you know what it's like, right?

I'll try to phrase it better. If you like Starbuck's coffee and it's quick and easy for you to get, would you go out and try another coffee shop that will take you longer for you to get your coffee and risk it not tasting as good for the same price?

I don't want to distrubute MY homemade beer, I want to drink it. I don't want to sell MY homemade weed, I want to smoke it.

Again... we know more then when the tobacco industry was created. Don't do it that way. Leave it natural. Make laws AGAINST adding harmful products to marijuana.

Again, this is really an easy hurddle

Well it's illegal through the Commerce Clause, so I'd imagine the Constitutional justification for legalizing it would come through the same clause. The thing is that no one (but especially the liberal bloc of SCOTUS) wants to change the interpretation of the Commerce Clause as laid out in precedent. Changes the interpretation would threaten lots of legislation (especially New Deal era legislation). See Gonzalez v. Raich.

No question... "weed shops" will open up. But regulate them so they don't add harmful chemicals. "We" are smarter today then we were yesterday...we have a better method today then we did when the cig industry was created.

YOU may just want your own weed, but you don't think there are going to be people who want to distribute it and make some easy cash?

You would think what you stated is an easy hurdle, but if the government is going to legalize it, they are going to want to make a profit from it. Best and easiest way to make a profit from taxing it? Have it mass manufactured through large businesses.

Yes or no question for you, if major cigarette companies can mass manufacture weed and sell it in a similar fashion to cigarettes, do you think they'll pass on the opportunity to do so?

If the people in here arguing for it want it legal on the federal level, they'd have to completely amend that clause, and as you said it would effect many other aspects of legislature. No other way around that and it seems like a process that would take a good amount of time and resources to amend.

Basically, yeah. Big businesses like that are also likely going to add ingredients to it to create an addiction so they can sell large amounts and create regular customers.

Of course... but make siure they do it right.

Don't let them add harmful chemicals.

If Phillip Morris wants to jump in the Cannibis industry, fine. But make sure they keep it natural. Don't allow them to add harmful products.

How is that not an easy fix?

They don't allow Anheuser-Busch to put cyanide in a can if Bud Light. Don't let a Cannibus manufacturer to put nicotine or some other unnecessary chemicals in their new product.
