Lots of people in your own state disagree. NOLA has Michoud which employs a ton of people. NASA also advances many technologies that private companies wouldn't risk spending money on to improve technology. Not to mention that NASA has a strong connection to our department of defense.

Sorry I see in pointless, we will agree to disagree

Just space, moons fine, but something that far away is pointless. Please explain how space (not earth) cured diseases. A moon rock cured syphilis???

Space didn't cure anything. The technologies developed and tested for space exploration have been the springboards for many technologies that have been vital to many industries, including healthcare. That's the thing about space exploration: It's totally unknown. And that means NASA and those affiliated are allowed to take huge risks with technology and try things no one else would or could afford to.

It's cool and interesting, but just think its a waste of money with the economy where it's at

Your not understanding, the new world is earth not space. There's a difference, space you need a space ship, earth you don't

Depends on your definition of ship.

But I see your point. But think of it this way: Back before the New World was discovered, a lot of people said something similar. "You can get to places in Europe with a horse, no need for a boat! No reason to go over there!" (totally 100% accurate translated statement). Just because we can't see what may come in the future for space travel, that doesn't mean we shouldn't progress the science. It may seem like science fiction now, but maybe in the future, people really will live on and travel to Mars.

So are wars, welfare, and politicians salaries.. And those are not interesting....

This is a minute amount of money compared to that

NASA doesn't take the risk, the tax payers do. We will just agree to disagree, but it still is cool and interesting

I'm all for doing things to help the economy. But, IMO, let's do it without sacrificing endeavors that are solely in the business of learning more about our world and our universe. Knowledge is the greatest resource of the human race. Let's not squander it.

There is nothing more important to long-term economic growth and innovation that what NASA has done/ will do.

You can thank space exploration (and military R&D) for much our country's innovation between 1960 and now (replacing commercial R&D of the first half of the 20th century.

But they do take the risk. Since space is still such an unknown venture, much like deep sea exploration, NASA and those affiliated can and do take risks when it comes to innovation and technology. These have lead to many great advances that have helped tons of people and industries, healthcare being one of them. You're right, the risk is at the expense of the tax payers, but good luck getting any major pharmaceutical company, medical technology company, et al to take the same degree of risks. Whether or not you agree, NASA is willing to gamble with their bottom line, big business isn't. And for the most part, even with the expense, it's been a beneficial experience for all of us.

I actually think it's associated and a good discussion. Not getting into political leans obviously, but the discussion on whether or not space exploration and NASA is a good use of federal money is an important one. A lot of people don't see the "use" for NASA and think it should be cut first to help the economy. I personally think it should be one of the last things cut. It's basically Americans investing in our intellectual future IMO.

Hell if someone keeps giving me billions of dollars whenever I wanted, I'd gamble with it too. Look out Vegas. I'm done, you have your beliefs, and I have mine. Great convo and did it land yet??

Isn't social security is people's saved money? That's not right. I don't get social security, but when I retire I still get paid my salary every year till I pass away

It may be just gambling. I'd like to think that with the plethora of intelligent minds at NASA that even the risks are well thought out and researched, but at the end of the day, taking a risk is how innovation happens. However, I'd rather a company (at least occasionally) take those risks than rest on their laurels just to appease their stakeholders, especially when they're in the business of helping people a la healthcare. Personally, I hate that the focos of the healthcare industry is so focused on the bottom line rather than on, you know, the healthcare of people. That goes for insurance companies, hospitals, medical suppliers, all of them.

    Gamble?

NASA are meticulous scientists. They are anything but risk-takers in the sense of waste of investment.

There are measures to be taken to help the net difference in recipients and beneficiaries.

Ironically, one of the unintended saviors might be young Latino immigrants and there large offspring.

Knowledge about space, how bout they use that money to cure cancer or another disease, Improve the countrie's infrastructure, pay back debt we owe. Do something that matters

here is an idea, start drug testing for welfare and we can do both... or better yet, how about community service to earn your welfare check? everyone else works for their money, why not work for theirs?
