Maryland, Rutgers in talks to join B1G

    What are the damages?

How did you bold that in my quote?

Regarding the exit fee and due diligence, there is a big difference to really drilling down into the exposure and drafting a memo.

  • Exit fee won't even matter if they are deciding whether to leave or not. This is a 100 year decision. Whether 50 million or 5 million that's meaningless in the long run.

I'm interested in why the big ten would even want them.

  • I guess I am in the minority but I see a lot of positives... The BIG picks up the DC, Balitmore, NYC and NJ markets (Those are HUGE). Also Rutgers has done well with big east money (what can they do with BIG money) and MD would have BIG and Under Armour money to help create a successful program. Also they are both good academic and research institutions. Also it is looking more and more like super conferences are coming are way eventually (and it will be all about TV money) I guess it make a lot of sense to me when I look at it

You are acting like this is the first school that has ever left one conference to join another and had to deal with an exit fee. I assure you MD (and every other ACC member) has had their attorneys look at it and provide a legal analysis of how binding it is. That's what lawyers do for a living.

We are trying to figure out who we will hate in the Big 10. Indiana has been brought up a bunch of basketball at least. Nice to know the feelings mutual cheers

Average football. Less than mediocre basketball. Better than average academics. Top market in the country.

As a fan, I don't care about TV markets. I still have to watch MSU beat Rutgers in most years in football and throttle them in basketball. Not sure if they even have a hockey team, but again, we would throttle them if they do. Not excited about Rutgers.

Rutgers brings the NYC market about as much as Temple brings the Philly market.

Nobody in DC gives a crap about Maryland unless they're having a lot of success, which neither of their revenue sports have done in a few years. And even then they only get about 40,000 for football in their better years and their basketball program has less fans in the area than Georgetown's.

Don't overstate the market share issue.

Which is why we need to take Syracuse and Virginia too. As a side benefit, say hello to B10 Lacrosse!

Well, you and Rutgers are a combined 3-57-1 against PSU, so the answer is obvious.

This may very well be true, but at least their coaches don't rape little kids.

Yeah, congrats to them on not having a pervert on the staff. Impressive I guess.

If they both beat us every year, it will take more than 25 years to "even things up". The B1G is just adding our two biggest tomato cans.

Hey now, lets not offend Indiana, Illinois, and Minnesota. I guess this is good for MSU though. It gives us an opportunity to play crappier opponents. It may end up helping Wisco, Iowa, and MSU more than anyone else.

I think they may move Illinois over to the west to pair with NW. The want to keep competitive balance, so I think that would be the best setup.

  • Rutgers does not carry much water in New Jersey and even less in NYC but having Rutgers will allow the Big Ten to get more money per house from the cable and dish companies. The same goes with Maryland. This move is about expanding the foot print for the BTN.

  • "Loh, a former dean of the University of Washington Law School who holds a law degree from Yale, said that he believes very strongly in freedom of contract, wherein people are free to enter into and exit from relationships, provided they pay a reasonable amount of damages for breaking out of the relationship. The definition of “reasonable,” Loh said, is up for legal bodies to decide, but should not be “a damage that is so punitive and so overwhelming that it deters people from entering an agreement” in the first place.

In Loh’s view, the $50 million charge for leaving the ACC, which equates to three times the annual operating budget, represents not an exit fee but an “exit penalty,” which Loh believes is “illegal and philosophically not a good idea.”

This is from a Washington post article just after the ACC vote I thought spoke volumes, Id say we will see some laywers get very rich as much as anyone in all this...

  • As a Rutgers student and NJ resident my whole life, this would be great for Rutgers...

I also think Rutgers would become a bigger program with more money(obviously), and also because the people would have a lot more interest if their home games on an average year were:

Ohio St, Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska, Penn State...as opposed to this years slate of Howard, Uconn, Syracuse, Kent State, Army, and the BIG game against 19 L'ville.

Sure, then explain to me why they based their expansion around adding us? If you think backfilling with UConn after Maryland leaving doesn't hurt the ACC you are clueless. Its stunning how stupid people are when it comes to conference expansion.

It is stunning to me how stupid people are when it comes to using a mediocre team (UCONN) to state a comparison just to try and prove their point.

UCONN could actually be an upgrade (all things considered). I mean, we are talking abt Maryland. Besides the DMV market, Maryland doesn't bring a great amount to the table. Besides that tv market, I am not sure why B10 would want Maryland. Maryland will be another Illinois type university...but hey, you'll be consistenly ranked as the worst uniforms in the conference (although I liked the black ones today).

  • Not excited about this move at all. As bad as the B1G is these teams are even worse.

This is all about a cash grab to expand the network into their markets.
