Banner Flying Over Penn State Demands School to Take Joe Paterno Statue Down or 'We Will' (Photos) - College Football - NESN.com

The debate rages over whether or not the Joe Paterno statue at Penn State should be taken down in the aftermath of continued developments in the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The call for the statue to be taken down got even louder with the release of The Freeh Report last week, with media members and sports fans alike pleading for the statue outside the football stadium to be taken removed. Someone took that plea to a new level on Tuesday morning when a plane carrying a banner demanding the statue be taken down flew over Beaver Stadium. Take down the statue...

The statue of a person that covered up child rape is still standing on campus. Hopefully people will see what's wrong with that.

Remove OJ Simpson from the HOF first and then we'll talk.

Who cares about a flipping statue of a dead guy? People have an opportunity to help support victims of child abuse and instead they blow the money on a plane with a banner declaring that they'll perform a crime if the statue isn't taken down.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but helping suffering people who are alive is more important than razing some piece of metal.

The victims are getting the help they need, I'm sure. There is also the task of cleaning up that filthy university, and that statue is still standing for some unknown reason.

Those victims are probably getting help. I guess those are the only victims in the world who need help?

I'm still waiting to hear why flying that plane was higher priority than donating the money. I think in terms of the bigger picture a statue is relatively unimportant. Focus should be on the victims as well as awareness and prevention of child abuse. Am I wrong in saying that?

You're not, but getting rid of a symbol that showed that a game was put ahead of child safety wouldn't be so bad either

There are child abuse awareness and prevention groups all over the place. People donate left and right. Maybe that guy that rented the plane donated right before he went up? Neither of us know if he did or not.

What you are doing is trying to make other people look bad if those people are talking about the statue, Paterno, or just PSU in general.

Bottom line is, statue needs to come down. Library name needs changed. Anything he has to do with that university needs forgotten. He enabled child rape to go on for likely decades. Child rape is much worse than murder or paying someone to murder(OJ)

I'm not going to bother getting into this, but there's no evidence that football was their priority. That's besides the point, though.

There's a lot of things in this world that "wouldn't be so bad" to do. Like donating the money to a charity instead of flying a stupid plane around threatening to commit a crime if people don't do what you want immediately.

I hate to repeat myself, but let me know when OJ Simpson is removed from the HOF. Then we'll talk about taking down the statue. For now I think the statue is a very low priority item.

  • After talking with my mother (also a Pennsylvanian and former Joe Pa fan), I'm convinced the program needs to be temporarily shuttered.

The cover-up's purpose was so the University could protect its image and continue to drink from the ever-flowing revenues of the football program. It's time to turn off that tap for a little while, and let the University focus on being a university.

OK, since you want to get technical, what OJ was convicted of, and what Joe did, are worlds apart in the minds and morals of MOST human beings, even criminals in general for that matter. Defending the statue being there while bringing up the "criminals" responsible for the airplane, and OJ, I pity your family and pray you don't currently have, and never will have children

again, wtf? how is this in any way, shape, or form remotely similar?

the hof isn't an institution of higher learning and oj isn't the face of pro football the way joe pa is the face of penn state. the best comparison w/ oj is usc and they have removed all the simpson stuff.

Right, I'm sorry. I forgot I was speaking with a PSU fan with a 409 banner still flying high. You folks have certainly been the pinnacle of rational thought throughout this process.

I have an idea. PSU takes down the statue and ND fires its coach, AD and president for doing exactly the same thing - covering up sexual assault allegations to protect the program.

OJ murdered two people. I think you need to reevaluate.
