Mavs fear Deron Williams is Brooklyn-bound

  • What say you, tBB basketball fans?

Sources: Mavs fear Deron Williams is Brooklyn-bound - CBSSports.com

Four rival executives and a fifth person familiar with Deron Williams' thinking told CBSSports.com Tuesday that the Mavericks are becoming increasingly worried that the All-Star point guard will stay with the Nets when the free-agent floodgates open Sunday.

  • I'd be shocked. I know he's from Dallas but he doesn't give more than 2 squirts about that. He wants to be on a title contender and he said he would join Dallas because he believes Cuban can put a team together. I think Prokhorov is willing to get it done as well.

  • Going to be very disappointed if he doesn't choose Dallas.

I can see the appeal of staying in Brookyn though.

As a Nets fan, I can confirm that Prokhorov is hell-bent on putting a winning team together. He plans on doing this by throwing obscene amounts of money at whoever Billy King (GM) suggests. Unfortunately, I have much more faith in Prokhorov doing his job (spending money) than I do King doing his (putting roster together).

Many still think a Dwight deal is close to being hashed out. New Jersey's GM should be ashamed of himself for the Gerald Wallace trade though. They could have maybe gotten a truly elite young talent at six, instead they have 29 year old.....above solid Gerald Wallace.

Think about it though - if Brooklyn had the #6 pick, no matter who it was, they'd probably be getting traded. Even so, if you were Billy King and Avery Johnson, would you really rather have (right now, at this very moment, going into the 2012 season) someone like Tyler Zeller, Damian Lillard, or Jared Sullinger in your lineup over a proven veteran like Gerald Wallace? Prokhorov and Co. are trying to go into Brooklyn with a team ready to play. Right now, at this very moment, I'll take 5-6 years of Crash before I take an unknown in the draft for the next 10-12.

Billy King era greatest hits while 76ers GM

February 16, 2000: Traded Larry Hughes, Billy Owens, and Bruce Bowen for Toni Kukoc. (I loved drafting Hughes, who played the same position as Iverson, then trading him and the league’s premier perimeter defender for Kukoc. King always wanted a hard-working defensive team, and yet in one move traded two guys who went on to make the NBA All-Defense First Team for one of the softest defenders of all time).

Fall 2001: Gave Mutumbo a four-year deal worth more than $65 million. (It’s a bad sign when this seems like one of his more reasonable moves).

Fall 2001: Gave Aaron McKie a seven-year, $42 million deal. (That’s not a misprint. A seven-year deal for a role player. Fun fact, Aaron McKie retired before this deal would have expired.)

Summer 2002: 6-years 18 M for Greg Buckner. (And you wonder why the league fought so hard to cap the amount of years you could offer in a contract. If that cap didn’t go into place, the Nets right now would be working on an 18-year extension for Deron Williams. Also, Greg Buckner was waived 2 years later.)

December 2003: Signed Eric Snow to an extension for either three or four years and worth between $18 million and $25 million. Also, signed Kenny Thomas to a 7 year 50 million dollar deal. And for good measure, gave Derrick Coleman a three year extension. (Or in other words, the year Billy King ruined Christmas).

July 7, 2004: Resigned Brian Skinner for five years, $25 million. (This is a really underrated awful move. Brian Skinner is a career 9th or 10th guy and yet he received a 5 year deal. It’s also incredible that in the 3 years after we made the 2001 Finals, we gave out big time money to Snow, McKie, Thomas, Buckner, Coleman and Skinner. We also traded Mutumbo for Van Horn, Van Horn for Glenn Robinson, and Glenn Robinson for Jamaal Mashburn.)

And my personal favorite, signing Willie Green to a 6 year 17 million dollar deal in 2006. If you don’t remember, Green was set to sign the 6 year deal in the summer of 2005 but had a significant knee injury. Rather than use the injury as an excuse not to bring back a below average shooting guard or at the very least give him a shorter deal, King gave Green almost the same exact deal 9 months later. Who exactly was King bidding against here? Green was a former second round pick coming off major surgery.

Wallace isn't a number 2 option on a team anymore, he is a 3rd option. Would take the draft pick especially in this deep draft

And Billy King is a horrible horrible GM.

This. Aussie, do you think we'll draft Marshall if he's still there at 17? It would be good in the sense that it's a Plan B for Deron, but it could end up being a pick better utilized on a Terrence Jones or PJ3.

Not bad at drafting. Not sure he understands what money or currency is. Didnt he give Travis Outlaw 36 million

Believe it or not, Outlaw wasn't a King contract. Rod Thorn gave him a contract worth $35 million over 5 years.

BK did make the move to amnesty him shortly after that though!

Marshall would be a solid plan B if he is still available.

We desperate need to get more athletic at the position.

    Aussie

  • Yeah...not to count my chickens or anything, but if Deron is leaving he's got a funny way of showing it, hanging around press conferences at the training center, as well as training there regularly.

He's dumb as shit if he doesn't go to Dallas. The Brooklyn Nets will not win a championship anytime soon even if they add Dwight Howard to.His best shot is signing with a Western team if his real goal is getting a ring.Dallas or LA is his best shot.
