McCarron the calm amid NCAA circus

Getting a fourth title ring will be AJ McCarron's most demanding challenge yet. But the pressure has gotten to him just once -- after, of all things, a win.

  • It really is amazing to think he has won a national championship 3 out of the 4 years he has been at Alabama. Now he has a chance to win 4 out of 5. It he were to somehow win the Heisman this season I think it would be hard not to consider him the greatest college QB of all time.....if he's not already considered that. All he does is win.

  • espn had some talking heads stating that aj was not an elite player. look as his 3 championship rings and his stats from last year...explain to me what an elite player looks like. this guy could be the greatest quarterback to ever play at alabama! he had 3 ints. last year and 2 of them were not his fault.

  • He's better than I thought prior to this season but you can't deny the benefit of his ridiculous supporting cast every year.

Like Derek Dooley pointed out, Saban drafts and has the top 25 picks. Everyone else has to recruit.

  • IMO the kid doesn't have GREAT skills, but he's EXTREMELY football smart, and smart in general... He never makes mistakes, so that makes up for what he lacks in elite skills.

What I mean is, he doesn't pop off the screen when you see him like some big name QB's do (Boyd, Manziel, etc). That's just my opinion though, I'm not a scout or analyst or anything like that lol

I disagree. He throws an elite deep ball.

I would call him good - very good in every category of QB play but not elite in any one thing, except like I said his football IQ and decision making.

He's the college version of Tom Brady. That's what you are getting at.

I'd say a better version of Brady when it comes to decision making honesty, but skills. Yes, good comparison.

  • I honestly don't know how anyone can say he's not elite or at the very least "borderline elite".

    - He's accurate and throws a beautiful ball (elite)
    - Makes great decisions, very few mistakes (elite)
    - Leads by example on and off the field, disciplined (elite)
    - Does well in most every big game situation, calm under pressure (elite)
    - Very football smart, reads defenses well, makes great in-game adjustments (elite)
    - Coaches fully trust him in every scenario, for Saban to do that...(elite)

The 46 TDs in 28 games is good, but having only 8 INT's is crazy. Also, as a two year starter his overall completion percentage is 67%. During that run, 7 times he completed at least 75% of his attempts (6 were SEC opponents), 13 times he completed at least 70% of his passes (8 SEC opponents + ND).

Said it before last season, AJ is going to go down as the best passer in Alabama history

Another J Barker. Will not translate in the NFL like all bammer QBs. It's the system see Spurrier?

Barker can't hold AJ's jock and that's me being nice here. I'm even a fan of Barkers but I'm realistic as well....

    Barker through 4 years
    5689 yards, 26 TDs, 24 INT CP 57.8%

    McCarron through 2 years
    5567 yards, 46 TDs, 8 INT CP 67%

Add Richard Todd into that list. And I guess we add Brodie LOL. Ok no way I'd add a QB without a win in like 8 starts.
