Meet the Next Vince Young

Whitewright High School (Whitewright, TX) quarterback Tyrone Swoopes is looking to follow in the steps of former Texas Longhorns signal-caller Vince Young.

  • Is that a moniker a HS kid would still enjoy? I guess so.

  • Why does he have to be the next Vince Young? VY is VY...

Let Tyrone be himself... Comparing an unproven recruit to possibly the best QB to come out of the University of Texas can only end in disaster imo.

He won the title, and was a top 5 pick, and is still make $2 million a year in the league. A lot of kids would switch places with VY.

Good call. There's really no reason why a person wouldn't aspire to be the "next Matt Leinart" either, but somehow we never hear this.

    Fair point.

I think it's safe to say he is somewhere between Jordan Jefferson and Vince Young.

  • Texas recruit Swoopes intends to duplicate, not just follow, VY's impact for Horns

WHITEWRIGHT — In a perfect world, Tyrone Swoopes would be coming to Texas after being drawn to the Longhorns during Vince Young's efforts in the 2005 BCS national championship game comeback victory over Southern Cal.

Swoopes vividly remembers watching Young cross the goal line for the winning score. But that's about all he can remember from that night.

"I fell asleep when Texas started losing. I didn't think they'd come back," Swoopes said. "I woke up to see the end of the game, though."

So what if Swoopes missed the build-up? At least he got the gist of the story.

Swoopes, Whitewright's 6-4, 225-pound dual-threat quarterback who has committed to Texas, grew up a Longhorns fan. That became particularly evident in middle school when Swoopes, a young quarterback for his seventh grade team, began running the same zone read scheme that Young had operated within at Texas.

It was not only following Young's NFL career at the time, but going back and studying his college games that Swoopes hoped would make him a master of the zone read.

"I tried to be as close to him as I could," Swoopes said. "He was good at what he did. I try to do the same things."

Now Swoopes — the No. 9-ranked prospect on the American-Statesman's Fabulous 55 list of the state's top recruits, and the 66th-ranked overall prospect in the country by 247Sports — has a lot of Texas fans hoping he'll do more than just study Young. They're hoping he'll do what Young did at Texas.

Those expectations may not be fair to Swoopes, who still has his senior season to play, but he knows it comes with the territory.

"I can see how people can look at me and want me to play like him and win like him," he said. "I want to win, and I want to succeed, but I don't think I'll be able to be just like Vince."

Swoopes, who picked Texas over Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Oklahoma, committed on Feb. 17. The comparisons to Young started immediately.

Swoopes has always been a quarterback. He's a multi-sport athlete, earning All-State honors in basketball and qualifying for regionals in track. He even tried baseball this spring, making one appearance as a pitcher.

"It's no different than quarterback, really," he said. "It starts and ends with the ball in your hands."

That's about where the comparisons end. Even better for Swoopes, those comparisons haven't been brought up in conversations he's had with Mack Brown, Bryan Harsin or the rest of the Texas staff.

"They've told me that when I get down there, they expect me to be Tyrone Swoopes," he said. "Not anybody else."

Swoopes' quiet, competitive demeanor reflects where he calls home. Whitewright is a small farming community of about 1,700, east of Sherman. Whitewright head coach Jack Wylie said the community values of excelling in athletics and academics, working hard and respecting yourself and others is a big part of what makes Swoopes who he is.

"You'd never know he's who he is based on how he acts. He's almost too good to be true," Wylie said.

"I'm humble and don't get a big head about what's going on," Swoopes said. "That's the way Whitewright is. You just go on to the next game and handle things with class."

He has rushed for more than 3,500 yards and 56 touchdowns, and has thrown for more than 2,700 yards and 28 touchdowns over the past two seasons. Swoopes said he speaks weekly with Harsin — Texas' co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach — and said he feels like he'll be able to pick up the offense once he's fully engulfed in it.

Even if he doesn't achieve exactly what Young did as a Longhorn, Swoopes said he would like to have one thing in common with Young when he's finished — winning a national title at Texas. Even though he was asleep when Young was rallying Texas past USC more than six years ago, Swoopes indeed got the gist of what that night was all about.

"I think about that moment all the time," he said. "When the game is in the fourth quarter and everyone is tired, I want to be the guy who makes a play to lift my teammates and help carry us to a win."
