Memorial Day 2011 to Memorial Day 2012: A year to forget for CFB

  • Tressel's departure from Ohio State started a memorable year for scandals -- college football - ESPN

Jim Tressel's Memorial Day resignation from Ohio State last year marked the start of a 12-month stretch when college football found itself constantly under siege.

Someone will always win the title. The rest of CFB is supposed to behave a little better though.

CFB is at a real crossroads.

    1. Realignment has put most tradition matchups on thin ice

    2. Corruption is rampant as always but we're entering an era in which folks actually want to get rid of it. Can the sport purge the behaviors which have basically always defined it?

    3. CFB is following the NFL down a road towards improved player safety that noone knows where it will lead.

Just interesting. None of it is freak out worthy and much of that could end up being really really good for the sport and its fans. But a cross roads nonetheless.

  • I consider the 2011 season to be the worst season I've ever seen in College Football:

    1.Scandals galore
2.Conference re-alignment screwing up the game worse
3.The bowl games for the most part sucked (save the Fiesta, Rose, New Orleans and Outback Bowls)
4.Some great regular season games but not many rememberable ones.
5.Possibly the worst bowl matches possible (UCLA vs Illinois, Boise State vs Arizona State, Cal vs Texas)
6.Teams getting BCS games they didn't deserve (Michigan and Virginia Tech) getting a spot over teams that did (Michigan State, Boise State, and Kansas State)
7.Possibly the worst National Title game in the BCS era (although the 2007 BCS Title Game makes a fair case as well)
8.The equilivant to a cripple fight in the BCS Title Game that came about due to bias in the media and in the Coaches Poll (SEC coaches/alum wrote in Bama across the board while only Big XII coaches and a few others voted in Okie State).
9.Proof that this game as a whole is broken completely.

  • I'm not using this as an excuse by any means bc we got our butt whooped fair and square but man it's easier to gear up for a team that beat you in your own house than if you've already beat that team.
