There's a huge difference between being able to afford it and it being a rational financial move, especially for a 21yr old who is still in college. Sounds like you have mommy, daddy, and grandma to worry about that, so have at it. Leasing is almost always a terrible move, but if you are one of those people who just has to have a new car every 3yrs then it might be the way to go. Especially if you are looking at BMW/MB, which tend to start having expensive little problems about the time the warranty is running out.

I'll play the odds and bet that the payment/insurance on a $50k+ vehicle is more than 20% of your take home income, which is financial absurdity. If it isn't, I'd love to know what a 21yr old without a college degree is doing for a living. But if you plan on living in grandma's pad and you come from a family of means, go ahead.
In 4yrs when the new car smell has worn off and you want something else, you'll still be stuck with the payment and insurance and then all the little maintenance issues will start to come.

I am not all that much older than the OP and could buy a handful of 5-series in cash, but I don't weigh myself down with dead and depreciating assets. I can afford and have whatever fun I want to, and that is in large part due to the fact that I do not drive $50k+ vehicles. Financial freedom is a lot more important to me than impressing other people with fancy "stuff," but I see where he is coming from. To each his own.
I'd personally lease because I bet you'll want no part of that car in 3yrs.

I don't think OP is trying to impress as much as he is all about enjoying his youth before he gets tied down in life. He is in a unique situation with no other debt. Leasing is the smart option if his driving habits fit the parameters. We identified that they don't. Some BMW's are much more than "fancy" stuff. They are performance machines. They are a lot of fun to drive. His high maintenance costs are completely irrelevant due to his extremely low living expenses. In three years, he will probably sell the thing to a wannabe(that you speak of) at a profit.

How, exactly, do you know he's purchasing a 5 to impress other people? Most men who purchase a BMW for that reason buy a 3 Series, that's why I believe many of them (if not all) are probably pricks. Do you have a 3 Series?
Further, it's my experience that people who say they can afford anything they want cannot. People who have that luxury rarely talk about it as it is low brow to talk of such things.
Please indulge me and explain why you're so concerned about what another man does?
