I wouldn't call him a dropout in the typical way. He simply went to Michigan to train under his coach (Bob Bowman) while Bowman was the head coach there. When Bowman left UM, so did Phelps. Phelps would just go to class and smoke some weed to pass the time while training.
In fact, he may be a UM fan now after having attended, but I doubt he's a life long fan or anything like that.
Funny story... when I was 6, Bob Bowman was my coach... I bought a donut before my race. He took it from me, I cried, and then he bought me some trail mix... I cried more...

Im very serious. He qualified for 5 different Olympic teams. 1980 was boycotted though, I think.
He only won 9 golds and one silver, but thats 90%.
He also had the same feat that Owens did, winning 4 gold medals in the '84 gms. Lewis is also the only athlete to defend his gold medals in both the 100m and long jump. Matter of fact, he won 3 or 4 straight gold medals in the long jump.
Its close imo, because swimmers can enter in like 8 events. In Lewis' limited medal chances, he won gold 9 outta 10.
