Well. To that I say bullshit. I've been to every major city in this country not named Charlotte, NC. I'm from Oregon. I CHOSE Detroit.

And by your definition, Cario, IL would rank right up there with Detroit. Flint would be in the same boat. Baltimore is downright "scary" in parts. The Bronx sucks. New Orleans is the murder capital of the world. Minneopolis is the rape capital of the world(and by a factor of like 8--which begs the question--what the fuck is wrong with minnesotans?), I was mugged in Cincinnati, which also ranks as the most conservative large city--see creationist museum. It's also dangerous. Cleveland is terrible by your definitions. Saginaw is bad. Seattle leads the country in suicide. Memphis is "bad".

I digress. Your definitions of what makes a good city sucks. "Detroit" looks a lot like a lot of places. People come to Detroit and I blow their minds. I'm the best cheerleader it has. And I'm not even from here.

But then again I'm not taking them to brightmoor or anything.

Detroit is an awesome place to live. I'm in grad school at Wayne St. now, and I love it. When I graduate I plan on staying in the city. People that bash it have no idea what they are talking about. There are bad areas just like every other major city, but Midtown, Corktown, Downtown, Woodbridge, Indian Village are all growing at a pretty substantial rate.

People that come to visit are amazed, because the country's perception of Detroit is so far off.

Haha zing. There are some pretty good shots on both sides today. Great thread.

lol. Michigan is beautiful. Ohio is a real peace of shit.

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is beautiful. Which honestly, is more like Wisconsin than Michigan anyways. Rest of Michigan is a pos, and that's after living there for 4 years.

Detroit's population has stabliized. White flight ended in the 80s.

Or to put it in doop language you'll understand, "INSERT MOUTH! INERT FOOT! DOOPY DOO DOO!"

You don't know what your'e talking about. We're not talking about cleveland here. I'd listen to what you'd have to say there, my ohioan friend. But we are clearly in a realm you know very little about. All I ask is you stop insulting a place you don't understand. And stop saying untrue things like, "People "r" fleeing like the place is on fire." Is that too much?

What don't you like about Saugatuck traverse city, Boyne, harbor springs, petosky charlevoix? The beaches? The great restaurants? The skiing in winter and summer? The horrible time fishing, hunting, backpacking? What is the biggest problem?

I don't like Troy, Birmingham, Harbour springs, etc because it makes me sad as it reminds me of the wealth that used to exist in wayne county before everyone picked up and left and turned it into the laughing stock of the nation. Where did the wealth of detroit go? To the unholy temple that is the Somerset collection. God i hope that place burns to the ground.

Currently the people fleeing Detroit are being replaced by young 20 something professionals who are refurbing warehouses into cool flats and such. It's starting, but has a long way to go. There are some great night life spots in downtown Detroit and I've never been nervous about having my family down there. You HAVE TO KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING and if you make a wrong turn you can get messed up. Detroit has too many square miles to be adequately covered by police and fire and really needs to shrink. Till it does and we can wipe out some horrible areas on the west side it wi be very rough in some areas. It will take well over a decade and we need better leadership still however you can go downtown and see some urban renewal starting. Those young yuppies doing it downtown are having a blast.

Check out Broderick Tower. There are still some units available. If you're high enough, you can see the entire field of Comerica. Awesome.

I live literally across the street from motor city casino. Kitty corner to old tiger stadium. I hope in saying so no 247 dumb fucks throw a bomb in my window.

I love putting people like you in their place. I shouldn't, but it's a guilty pleasure.

I love how you folks spit out the most stupid shit and then say it's "fact". Unless you redefine a "fact" as : whatever stupid shit PIIHB RNP spews out on a daily basis, you can't just say anything is a fact. It's like quoting the bible to prove the bible. Doesn't work.

    Example:

you say: people "R" fleeing detroit like the place is on fire. Key phrase: ARE FLEEING-present progressive tense. You are talking about something that is happening RIGHT NOW, only the problem is it's happened in the past, as your little wikipedia search showed. Ergo your fact becomes a lie.

Again, that is unless Miriam Webster redefined a fact as, "whatever stupid shit PIIHB RNP spews out on a daily basis."

An actual, old-fashioned fact would be, as I've said-the population of detroit has stabilized. As have the property values.

You know, I hear this all the time as I work in the suburbs.

I've given it a lot of thought, and I sort of resent it. I hate to agree with the likes of PIIHB RNP on any level, but economically, Detroit is in ruins. It's absolutely failed. But I notice that Bloomfield Hills and Birmingham keep trucking right along. The yachts are still flowing with champage on Grosse Ile and Lake Angelus. These people never go to the city, either, unless they have to. I know this because I wear a tie and they think I'm one of them and tell me as much. The only words of regret they'll utter is that the neighborhood they were born in is now in ruins and (depending on the person and their racial attitudes) filled with black people.

I'm beginning to think Detroit could just go away and no one in Chokeland county would miss a beat. I hate to turn this into a class thing, but I'm thinking that whole, "a healthy detroit means a healthy michigan" is just a ruse to dupe detroiters into thinking that rich people actually give a shit about them. Because they don't.

Post edit: When I say chokeland county will be fine, I'm generalizing. The working class of gm, GE, Blue Cross, etc would not be fine. I'm talking lake angelus people.

  • I'm working in Wyandotte today. I just asked a guy in his 50s what caused the downfall of detroit. He leaned in close and said, "the blacks." I asked him to elaborate. "They started rioting and they put in that damned coleman young."

Seriously just happened. Not that I'm surprised. I've done these little social experiments before, and the sad truth is--michigan is a very divided, segregated place.

I guess what I'm saying, and on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, racist white guy from Wyandotte agrees with me, WE'RE NOT ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. But we should be.

Sorry. I don't know what's gotten into me today. I'm not usually this pedantic. I come here to feed my addiction to college football, not talk sociology. Go ducks. Go Spartans.

If Detroit "goes away" I'm just going to assume you're banking on general motors moving their HQ to a Detroit suburb. No, I'm thinking you'd be praying for it. You might also be booking on dan Gilbert staying in Michigan and not moving to Ohio with thousands of jobs that people who live in the suburbs go to work for each day down there. I'm guessing that without the parts companies and sorting operations in Detroit you'll be hoping they don't go to Alabama too. Then, when the casino and night life dries up I'm assuming you think all the jobs from construction to waiters to chefs to bag boys all live in Detroit and don't pay mortgages, city taxes or shop in the suburbs where they live. Also, the amount of money the state collects in taxes from those corporations and jobs disappears. Fun times

Yeah Detroit needs work. No doubt, you have no idea what would happen to the suburbs if it goes away.

I condensed your argument for you. Although you mention valid things, language like that kind of ruins it. My anger ruins mine sometimes. I'm aware of it, though.

You're right. I have no idea about any of those things. I see the rush hour going into the city in the morning and out of the city at night and I never really thought about where those cars were going. I figured they were all just going to the silverdome for their nightly steely dan concert.

So someone lives in Farmington Hills and works in detroit. They pay property taxes in oakland county, and rarely stimulate detroit's economy as they always pack their lunch. Clearly they have a "stake" in detroit and I'm sure thousands are in their same yacht, err, boat. What I was getting at was that Detroit doesn't have a stake in them. That's it.

It's lame you talk like I'm wishing for the downfall of detroit. I don't know where the hell you got that idea. I love this place. I live here. Detroit has a stake in me. You talking like it's otherwise makes you look out of touch. I'll stop there. I wouldn't want my anger ruining a good argument or post.
