    Did he say that?

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

I read somewhere the coaches as a whole believe that this is a 9-win team, and I believe that there isn't as much rebuilding as people would like to think. Also, everyone thinks we're going to try and radically change the offense in one season. Hoke isn't as stupid as RR, he sees his personnel and realizes any transitional change (at least on the offense side of the ball) is a process and not to force it. You'll still see plenty of Shotgun looks, and given Borges track record, he'll have free reign to tinker to his offenses strengths all he wants. Yeah, the defensive scheme is going to be completely different, but there is no possible way they can't improve with a scheme that makes more sense in the B1G and coaches that can actually teach technique.

  • And for the record, I'm in the cautiously optimistic camp regarding Hoke. Even if we only win 6-7 games this season, as long as we aren't getting thrashed by upper-echelon teams and keeping games tight, I'll know we're headed in the right direction.

And MSU does? When's the last time you guys even went to a BCS bowl? Oh, right, you haven't.

Kinda hard to know what it's like to "stay" on top when you haven't ever been on top :(

That's more than fair. 9 wins is high to me, but hey, I'm an MSU fan. If I was a UM fan, I'd be happy with improved on-field performance; if that results in more wins, great. Pretty much how we viewed MD's 1st year; we didn't lose a single game by more than a TD, and didn't fold after getting down a score or two.

Obviously the stakes are higher now, and I'm sure you guys will expect a big jump in year 2, but as wishy-washy as this sounds, an "eye-test" approach to this season is probably the best bet.

Yeah, I agree with this. I think anywhere from 7-9 wins is possible. Even if we only get 7 wins I expect the games to be a lot closer and more competitive than last year.

Also SpartanRocky, you're the best spartan poster and we appreciate your feedback and insight. It's nice to be able to actually have a discussion without the flames.

Agree, but I think the team Hoke inherited has more talent than the one MD did, and we might get a couple more of those swing games than you guys did. Not saying it is going to happen. TBH, most of us are still going to be in the dark until the Western game, and I don't expect the coaches to reveal too much of their gameplan until the ND game unless the Western game is close.

MD had a few things working in his favor, particularly on offense. A pass-first pro-style QB that fit our system immediately, who actually started our last 2 games the year prior (Hoyer), a future NFL WR and TE in Devin Thomas/Kellen Davis, and a pair of solid to great RBs in Ringer and Caulcrick. We also had 2 stud DEs in St. Dic and Baldwin, who combined for 18.5 sacks, 8 FF and over 30 TFL. We also were forced to play a true frosh named Greg Jones lol. Our OL also came together; we averaged something like 210 yards on the ground and 212 yards/game through the air.

What let us down that season was our defense; even with a pair of stud DEs we were still woeful against the pass. Right now, UM lacks those DE threats and it's pass D in 2010 was nearly as bad as MSU's in '06. Then again, we didn't expect St. Dic and Baldwin to blow up like they did either, nor did we know what we had in Greg Jones. . . . that's why ya play the games!

I'd expect a few surprise contributors on both sides of the ball for you guys, maybe someone like Jibreel Black just "clicks" and makes huge strides, or Marvin Robinson becomes a head-hunting, ball-hawking safety, etc.

I totally agree with you about ND; MSU isn't going to know jack about their team before ND. I always tell folks that the only thing that MAC/FCS competition can tell you is if you're going to suck that year; i.e., if you can't get a push against a MAC OL/DL, and thus dominate the game, you're likely going to be in for a long season. If you do blow them out, all that gets you is a reprieve until you actually play a decent BCS-conf level opponent.

Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

They don't like me because I don't hold back on the national board. There is no point to tip toe around them here. If they had their own board, I would respectfully post there without flaming. They don't though. They use this board as their own. I even stay out of the recruiting thread. That's kind of their version of a 24/7 message board. I congratulated them on their latest basketball recruit without getting into the who offered who war. Something they can't handle with Pittman and Burbridge.

In a thread on the national board talking about Michigan's record, I'll post my thoughts. There is no reason for the initial flame war. You don't like me predicting 7 wins and a bowl win? Fine, tell me why I'm wrong. Leave out the, "Sparty is dumb, your ACT score sucks, I'm so much better than you, blah, blah, blah". That's what it turned into. I won't play victim. Like I said, I don't hold back on here.

You come to the national board and that's all you talk about is Michigan, you love Michigan, and it is obvious to everybody that, that is all you think about. With Rocky as an example, he love MSU first and foremost, he may discuss and take jabs at Michigan football, but when it is all said and done, he wants to talk about Spartan football. With you Harry, there is nothing but Michigan football. The sad thing is, this is the high point for MSU since the 60's. Coming off the most wins in a season in the programs history, sharing a Big Ten title with 2 other teams, your first in over 20 years, a stable coaching staff, you haven't lost a top recruiter or Coordinater in the last 2 years, no health concerns for any coaches... You have all that going for you and you still only want to discuss Michigan.

We don't like you because you're a completely useless poster. When SpartanRocky says that we're gonna go 7-6 or so, he gives reasons and says why. I may not agree with everything he says, but that's because I'm a UM fan and he's an MSU fan. I respect his opinion.

When you come and say we're gonna go 7-6 because we suck, that's idiotic. Give a reasoning. Support your statements. You can't just say "uhh you suck." That's not a reason.

We can't handle that with Pittman and Burbridge? Read MGoBlog, read our thread, read anything. Most (not all, but most) UM fans have been complimentary. We've admitted that we really wanted Burbridge, and that he's gonna be a stud. I hope he makes it to EL because he's gonna be really fun to watch. We may not have had room for Pittman, but he's another guy who is gonna be a great Spartan. Congratulations, they're very good players. I don't remember people bashing those recruits or doing anything like the Chris Wormley thread that OSU and MSU d-bags did.

Yes, the old, "you hate UM more than you love MSU" stuff. Or the, "you would rather watch Michigan lose than watch MSU win". Blah, blah, blah. Do not care.

I talk Michigan on here because you guys have swarmed the bored. It's entertaining stuff. This board is somewhat dead outside of the UM talk. Could you imagine the blue board without the Michigan fans? It would be empty.

I like national boards. Rivals has a better main board going. I tend to post over there pretty often. Not UM related stuff. But, I also post a lot about the SEC, why? Well, they have a heavier concentration of southerners. Makes sense, right?

You can rip MSU all you want. You take your shots in here about the 60's and that MSU just wants to talk about UM. But basically, that's you saying that, not me. Just look how easy it is to rattle the cage.

    "UM sucks".

What!? Unbelievable! Inconceivable! Hokemania! and on and on and on. Take a look at this thread. It's prime evidence. You are one of them.

What did MSU fans say about Wormley? I wasn't in it.

I have given reasons as to why I don't think UM will be good. It just turns into more flames. I did it last week.

Denard hasn't played in a pro-style offense at a competitive level. In high school he did? Ok. I watched him misread his own defense and throw pics in the spring game. You know, the worst defense in the Big Ten the past few years.

Speaking of the defense, you have a good to potentially great D-line. After that it gets shaky. Real quick. A bunch of unproven guys all over that defense that have been coached at a questionable level. Remember that teddy bear thing? What was that all about? Strange stuff.

Your special teams have been borderline pathetic. Worthy blocked a FG last year against you guys. Zoltan was a great punter but he's gone. Your kickers look pretty mediocre. When was the last great Michigan kicker? It's been a struggle over the years.

Your offense was potent last year but it's a big unknown this off season. Again, Denard at QB and no real back up. You have some very average RB's and some small playmaker slot WR's. Solid OL, probably the strength on offense and maybe the team. The WR's are good but losing Stonum will make you thin there.

Again, I've made these comments on here. You're just making things up. It's convenient. It's a quick reason to hate me. I just say what I feel and I don't sugar coat it. SpartanRocky is a mod and he's a nicer guy. He sugar coats it. It's what you guys are used to with the UM press all these years. It's why you hate Valenti and guys like me. We get under your skin with comments like, "nah, they just aren't that good". Noooooo! Never! Arg!
