So I'm really wondering here: how many football players have played both ways under Dantonio? So far that seems to be a selling point that the MSU coaches have made to at least 2 recruits that I'm aware of. Since that really doesn't happen much anymore these days, I was wondering if Dantonio really does use players on both sides of the ball and I just wasn't aware of it.
Michigan State does not and will not run the 3-4 defense.

Tony Lippett has played at both CB and WR last season, more @ CB. He's now at WR full-time.
Kellen Davis in 2007 played both TE and DE, had 2 sacks.
Kirk Cousins played both Quarterback and Motivational Speaker
Jeremy Langford played CB last year and RB/WR this year. He can move back and forth.
So . . . not a ton, but it happens. It's more that one guy starts on D, then moves to O and vice-versa than they play both ways in the same season. For instance, Lawrence Thomas is a FB/H-back but started the year at DE; I don't think he'll get many defensive snaps until bowl practices (he's played well at FB/H-back though).
Demetrious Cox is probably going to be a wildcat QB and safety next year.

The bold part is natural in CFB due to injuries and whatnot. Just seems weird to plan on playing a player in multiple positions to begin with. Unless it's a Harvin role, I would be worried about stunting a player's growth by not having him focus on one position.
Hope Cox gets his chance, because I know Dantonio told him that he'd play both ways.
Thanks, Rocky.

I doubt Coach D told anyone he could run both ways. Have a chance to play either D or O? Yes, but not play both ways. Dantonio wants athletes first and foremost. Top athletes can often times play mulitiple positions in high school and thus have potential to play either O or D in college.

I assume you were the downvote,
. Did you not follow his recruitment? Plenty of links on Cox's recruitment. Many of them say "safety AND wide receiver." (emphasis added) I remembered reading it quite a bit with regards to Cox. I think the attached article with the following quote should bring you up to speed. Quite sure there are more similar quotes in other articles.
“Michigan State is talking about me playing on both sides of the ball like I think it’s their No. 82 (Keshawn Martin),” Cox said.
Like I said...that's fine if MSU wants to do that. I'd personally want a player to focus on one position for the most part. Or at least one side of the ball.
And regarding the other recruit I had in mind, it was VIP info in the most recent Red Cedar Rumblings, which is what made me think of it.

Considering all the quotes together, I think it's obvious that the MSU coaches are literally talking about playing him both ways. What you're referring to is indeed something coaches do, but I've not heard a single one refer to it as playing "DB and wide receiver" or "play on both sides."
To me, either MSU coaches were recruiting him to play both sides (not just practice) or Cox misunderstood what they were saying (which does happen).
