  • What you guys think.so far?

I told some people when you hired him that he was going to be fired at Baltimore and got crucified. He was known for vanilla defense in Baltimore , how.is he now?

Second or third best DC in the country behind Chavis and maybe Smart (hard to know with Smart because Saban's a huge part of Alabama's D).

  • not a michy fan but, mattison is a great recruitor which can mask his vanilla defense. Mainly keep players infront of you, which is easy when you have good players coming in. He isn't half as good as the michy fans think he is. And yes, Baltimore wanted him gone.

Vanilla defense? Do you watch very many Michigan games? It's constant zone blitzing and pressure from different areas. If there is one thing that Mattison is not, it is vanilla.

thats interesting that you think that Chavis is a top 5 DC - hadnt thought about it until now but i guess you could be right ; the guy from FSU would have to be up there as well

  • He's a good DC. Before he got here we gave up 65 points to Illinois.

  • Did anyone watch the behemoth defenses that were commanded by GERG? Anyone looks like a top 3 defensive coordinator compared to the guy who played with puppets.

  • Mattison turned Michigan's D from being ranked about 115 in the country to about 15 in the country in a single year. The guy can coach. What the guy can't do is take substandard DL size and talent and have them play a NFL-caliber OL to a draw.

He was known for being vanilla in Baltimore by those who hated him in Baltimore. Even if he may have been a little, that is the NFL and this is college. NFL vanilla is NCAA complex. Mattison is a great D-coordinator. I'll withhold judgment on him amongst the best until he gets his talent on that side of the ball.

  • Still happy. In a little more than a season, he has 3 losses as DC, the defending national champs, our division winners last year (msu), and Iowa. Not sure where the current staff will take us, but its more promising than the previous regime.

I know the NFL is different. I would love to hear what UF guys think about him.

I didnt think he was a goos fit for UM , but time will tell

Bama's O scored 34 against us last night. They have, according to everyone, the best O-line since the 90's. They also have three 5* RB's, including a future heisman winner in Yeldon. Meanwhile our D-line has someone new at every position. We protected pretty well against the pass. Only reason it looked so ugly is because Yeldon would crank out 10/20 yards every time he touched the ball. With all this said, 34 does not seem that bad.

With a sample size of one we have no idea what will happen the rest of the season. For all we know Bama will have the best defense and rushing attack in the nation and everyone will come back saying how they're amazed we didn't lose by 60.

The O-line was still in, Yeldon was still running the ball, and McCarron was still the QB. But you're right they literally weren't trying at all...

Very good coach at the time though when he and Strong were co-coordinators Strong was definitely the star of the show.

Can't coach. Great recruiter though which covers up for his vanilla defenses
