Michigan fans...Get in this damn thread

  • Others are allowed to chime in. Please don't turn this into the Official MSU/UM thread!

I want a real prediction (with reasons) of your record this year. I only singled you out because every poll I've seen has you very high (much higher than I would, as you'll see). TIA.

Sat., Sep. 1 vs. Alabama Jerry World 7:00 p.m. CT
    L. C'mon now. They still have a much better team.
Sat., Sep. 8 vs. Air Force Michigan Stadium 3:30 p.m. ET
    W. Thank you for serving, troops.
Sat., Sep. 15 vs. Massachusetts Michigan Stadium 3:30 p.m. ET
    W. Marcus Camby isn't walking through that dooooooooor.
Sat., Sep. 22 at Notre Dame South Bend, Ind. 7:30 p.m. ET
    W. Toss up. I'll go win because of the DUI.
Sat., Oct. 6 at Purdue * West Lafayette, Ind. 4:00 p.m. ET
    W. Much closer than your assholes want.
Sat., Oct. 13 vs. Illinois - Homecoming * Michigan Stadium 3:30 p.m. ET
    W. No more Zook? That's a shame. Might be closer than expected...
Sat., Oct. 20 vs. Michigan State * Michigan Stadium TBA
    L. That defense is definitely Top 5 in the country.
Sat., Oct. 27 at Nebraska * Lincoln, Neb. 7:00 p.m. CT
    L. Follow-up to the emotional MSU game...and AWAY.
Sat., Nov. 3 at Minnesota * Minneapolis, Minn. TBA
    W. They should let Tubby coach.
Sat., Nov. 10 vs. Northwestern * Michigan Stadium TBA
    W. Love Fitz...But c'mon.
Sat., Nov. 17 vs. Iowa * Michigan Stadium TBA
    W. They forfeit....players in the hospital and such.
Sat., Nov. 24 at Ohio State * Columbus, Ohio 12:00 p.m. ET
    L. Braxton Miller 1 year older with a coach that he was made to play for? Yes, please.

So...I have you going 8-4 (5-3) with one of the wins as a toss-up to ND. I see the floor as 7-5 (5-3) and the ceiling as 10-2 (7-1). UM will def lose to either MSU or OSU. Bama is gonna roofy that ass.

All joking aside (only the last sentence), how does everyone see this season going for UM? I'll stick with 8-4 (5-3).

I definitely think the magazines are over-hyping this team. Helps to sell subscriptions, I guess....

Thank you for the in-depth analysis of their schedule. I'll mark you down for Michigan going 0-1 next year.

  • I think that Airforce game is gonna be tricky, I always love/hate seeing them on our schedule because of that friggin'
triple option. It's the only team you will play that year that does it and it is near impossible to prep for. Best option is just to out score them. Other wise I will stay out of this conversation in respect to the OP

i agree with you at 8-4 although i really think they could win 9 very easily this year and maybe better - i think they lose to Alabama , OSU and possibly neb...the MSU game is going to be a wild one that could go either way

  • I'm on mobile so this won't be long.. but can someone answer a couple of questions for me?

First off.. why is everyone automatically marking Ohio as a loss? They got Urbs. Congrats. No disrespect to him, but you all DO know he's lost before right? And to Michigan... WITH Tebow at qb? With an overall better team (for what Urbs is trying to do.) All this automatic loss to the Buckeyes this year is really really premature.

State is still gonna have a damn good defense, but they're breaking in a new qb and receivers. As nasty as Gholston is, whether Spartan fans want to believe it or not, he's not gonna have the same opportunities without Worthy in there taking up double and triple teams. Gholstons definitely gonna see his fair share of doubles this year, and rightfully so... Cause he's an animal.

No offense to Nebraska, but they just don't seem to match up well with Michigan. They got steamrolled in Ann Arbor last year, and it just never seemed like.thy knew what hit them. Could've been a bad game. So I could he wrong, but they seemed to get blown off both lines all game long, and we were really undersized.

As for Bama... I don't think we're ready for a win against them, but it wouldn't shock me if we pulled off the upset. They lost a lot on D and although begged got tons of talent coming back, nothing replaces game reps. This is the game I'd mark.as.a.loss. any other is winnable.

  • None homer reply,

Loss vs Alabama, 3 years from now this game could potentially be a toss-up, as it stands now, Alabama has to much talent.
Win vs Air Force, While the option can be tricky, I believe that Mattison will have the D ready, and AF won't be able to stop the offense.
Win vs UMass, Michigan shuts down Michael Cox and rolls big
Loss at ND, Night game at South Bend, Michigan won't have the same last minute miracles this year.
Win at Purdue, Michigan has handled them recently and will continue to.
Win vs Illinois, See Purdue game.
Win vs MSU, Biggest home game of the year, and the players and coaches know it.
Loss at Nebraska, Never easy to win away games, especially against a quality opponent like Nebraska.
Win at Minnesota, Jerry Kill is a good coach, Minnesota is a bad program.
    Win vs Northwestern, Michigan rolls.
Win vs Iowa, Iowa has had Michigan's number the last few years, Michigan will get that monkey off their back this year.
Loss at tOSU, The Game will be special going forward, and as stated about Nebraska, winning away games isn't easy.

8-4, 6-2 in conference with a Capital One or Outback Bowl game.

  • dont disagree with you but with that schedule winning 9 games will be tough to do ; you could slip up and lose to Notre Dame and / or Iowa . Um will be tough this year and no question they could win enough games to play in a BCS this year

My biggest hurdles with the ND, Neb., and tOSU games is the fact that they are away game. Michigan was 8-0 at home, 2-2 on the road, last year.

Everyone seems to find the Worthy loss the key. I agree that it is a huge loss, but people are underestimating the talent on this defense. We return all of our DEs, LBs, CBs. Our only losses are two DTs (Worthy and Pickelman) and FS (Robinson).

Robinson himself said multiple times that he would never have received an offer to MSU in the past few years - everyone they've gotten is far more athletic than him. Where we will really miss him is senior leadership. Hopefully between Bullough and Johnny Adams we can cover that.

Worthy is a big loss, but White has the potential to the just as disruptive from the interior. Watch the Outback Bowl highlights - White absolutely dominated that game, even moreso than Worthy. When opposing teams key in on Gholston, they will be freeing up White, Rush (Freshman All-American, often gets overlooked), and a blitzing Bullough/Allen.

My point is - our defense is stocked with talent and we return 18/22 from the two-deeps. Assuming that at least a good amount of them make improvements, we are just too deep and talented across the board to be completely based off one player. Everyone talked about the loss of Greg Jones and Eric Gordon in 2010, and our LB corps ended up being even better. Now, I don't see the DL actually getting better, but I think the dropoff will be less than expected. Our LB and DB corps should take a step up.

Whether we win or lose in AA depends on the offense. The defense will be ready to play.

  • This season is going to hinge on 3 things IMO.

    1. Denard Robinson's progress. Does he cut down on the interceptions and become a legitimate college level passing threat.

    2. The defensive line. How quickly do they come together and adapt to new positions. Black is being moved inside to the 3 tech and Roh was moved to SDE. The back 7 seven returns and will be solid but the capabilities of this defense lie with how well this line can bounce back from the loss of Martin and Van Burgen.

    3. Will a deep receiving threat develop? Fitz and Denard will make a dangerous running duo, but you have to keep the defense honest.

    That said here's the predictions:

vs. Alabama - L. They are on another level from nearly all of college football.
vs. Air Force - W. Potential trap game after the 'Bama game. Triple option is tricky and the 1st half keeps us fans on the edge of our seat, but pull away in 2nd half.
vs. Mass - W. Like clubbing baby seals
    @ ND - W. Denard owns them
    @ Purdue - W.
    vs. Illinois - W.
vs. Michigan St. - Toss up, but going w/ a W. Michigan breaks the losing slide, but this can easily go the other way. State's defense will be very good once again, and they'll definitely show up to play.
@ Nebraska - W. They lost their best defense players and we absolutely murdered them last year. At Lincoln or not, I think we win.
    @ Minnesota - W.
vs. Northwestern - W. Northwestern always gives teams fits when you least suspect it. Never an easy win.
    vs. Iowa - W.
@ Ohio State - L. Need to see them play a game, but it's been a long time since we've won in Columbus.

    Total - 10-2 (7-1)

This could easily go down to 8-4 or go up to 11-1. The only for sure loss I see on the schedule is Alabama right now. though.

How about this? I'll bet you any amount of money (up to $1,0000) that my prediction is good.

How 'bout we set the over/under at 8.5 and bet on either side.

I saw those, and I agree. BHowever, coaches and players also made the same remarks about the loss of Greg Jones last year (rightfully so). The defense will improve and adapt. You don't lose top notch talent like that with no dropoff unless you're Alabama. Like I said - having a strong back 7 relieves a bit of pressure from the lines, and vice versa. Even if the DL regresses slightly, the LBs improve and the secondary either improves or stays consistent, this defense should be just as good.

Our run defense was excellent, our downfall last year was really the deep ball (namely vs. Russell Wilson and Aaron Murray). If we can quit the blown coverages leading to those then I will be much happier.
