Michigan not bringing band vs Bama

  • PTCcock195 said...

That you do. My brother and a lot of my dad's family are ND fans (Irish Catholics from Philly) and that damn fight song torments them. Not to mention your band plays it more than Vols play Rocky Top...which I didn't think was humanly possible.

That's because it's played for every first down. lol It's great in a stadium when you're level with the field and can't see across the stadium if the team is on that end...you know when there was a first down because the TMB plays "Fight On!"

Stop that, and you won't hear the band!

  • Ok so Michigan has an endowment of roughly 7.8 billion and Bama is roughly 995 million.

Um........someone said it's 400k to transport the band. You mean to say that less than half of 1 million dollars is too much of an expense?

Serious question Michigan .........is your AD of Jewish decent? I said for serious so clearly it is a serious question

I don't think paying for a bands trip to a football game falls under endowment restrictions.

  • The greatest marching band in the world will be at this game. D.Brandon is a business man first and foremost. This is just his backhanded way at getting a donor to pony up the $400K. And...that's exactly what will happen.

That's it. Nothing more to see here.

  • I will not be happy if this happens. I do think it is just a ploy to open up someone's checkbook, but if not I mean its just 400k. I know people have been emailing and calling Brandon about the issue.

  • i would love to see michigan's band next year at this game. i think our band, Million Dollar Band, is ok..nothing special. But "Hail to the Victors" would be a special treat to see.

I love it, but I have been told by many people that it drives them insane because we play it too much (oddly enough was told this at the Frozen Four last year by North Dakota fans and out hockey band plays the most songs out of any of our bands).

  • This should never be an issue for a prestigious university like Michigan, put something in place so it simply becomes part of your tradition to have the band at every football game played by your university. BIG-10 bands are the best in the country.

We had this conversation with Buckeye fans when tOSU was coming to the Coliseum, and I think it came down to the fact that they do not have a "senior band" like we do. Junior and Senior members of the band rotate (to make up 50-100) members to play at every away game. Two years ago, we played both Minnesota and Hawaii, and the band stayed over and did some commercial work for Hawaii Five-0. Lucky band members that got the Hawaii gig.

Point is, alums have been supplementing the Athletic Department in costs to send the band everywhere, it's just part of our tradition.

Well endowment has nothing to do with the athletic department. They operate by themselves, basically as their own company at this point.

Michigan's band typically travels for only one or two games a year. With road games at ND, Nebraska, and OSU, I don't see how they will travel to Dallas as well.

Some people think that this may be a bit of a ploy to have an alum pick up the bill or increase donations for this to happen. Conspiracy sounding, yes, but I have seen a few folks mention it.

    ^^^ Bingo ^^^

This is exactly what the Great Brandon is doing. And even if it works, it's embarrassing. He should have raised the extra money quietly from a couple of wealthy alums. Now we look like a bunch of cheap asses.

    MrWoodson

  • Michigan's band will be there. Already there is a lot of backlash so the money will get raised or UM will cover it.

It would be extremely bush league if they don't come though. Very Central Michigan, not so much Michigan. Think this is just a ploy to raise money as others have said.

Not really though, that is why it is so stupid. The MMB was allotted tickets in the original contract for this game, it's not like Michigan would have even paid to get these kids in the stadium. It's just a dumb move by Brandon IMO, for such a big game which should be a showcase for Michigan football, the MMB should be there.

Stephen Ross is all else fails should just dip into his billions and do it himself. Someone send him an email.

It's dumb as hell, Russ Brandon always trying to pinch every penny. The contract even has seats for the band so it's purely the transportation. Apparently he offered them to bus, and band said no. But I'm hoping there is enough backlash that he caves.

How else does your band travel? The MDB only flies if (a) they're going all the way across the country like in '09 or (b) they're not taking the full band. Otherwise, we bused all 400+ of us every trip.

They bus every game I believe, I guess they just weren't interested in bussing from Ann Arbor all the way to Dallas. 20 hour drive according to Google.
