Midwesterners: Blue Moon Ice Cream

  • BK has never tried blue moon ice cream. As a native Midwesterner, I grew up on the stuff, yet cannot think of the best way to describe the flavor. I am struggling mightily. How would you describe it?

Tell them it tastes like Superman ice cream, my favorite as a kid, but I couldn't describe how it tastes for the life of me.

No, nothing like either of them really. Definitely not like bubblegum.

    From Wikipedia:

There is much dispute concerning the flavor of Superman ice cream. Some simply believe that it is vanilla ice cream with red, blue, and yellow food coloring. The "fruity flavor" one experiences while eating Superman ice cream from such a concoction would be attributed to the placebo effect. However, most people would say that brown ice cream does not automatically taste like intense chocolate. Although the food-colored vanilla theory may be true in some cases, it is not true in all.
The Meijer store brand and the Hudsonville Creamery & Ice Cream Company versions of Superman ice cream are a mixture of vanilla, blue moon, and black cherry ice creams. Both of these companies are based in south western Michigan.
The Washtenaw Dairy in Ann Arbor version has blue moon, red pop, and lemon[2] ice creams. It is located in south eastern Michigan.
Thus the exact combination varies from location to location, typically with vanilla, blue moon, and some other variety of ice cream included. Hypotheses concerning the last flavor include typical fruity flavors, such as cherry, raspberry, strawberry, etc.[citation needed]

  • Fruit loops or fruity pebbles.

  • I live in Indiana and it's one of my favorite ice cream flavors. I don't really know how to describe though - it's just blue moon lol. But I highly recommend it to anyone.

Blue Moon is an ice cream flavor with bright blue coloring available almost exclusively in the Upper Midwest of the United States. The Chicago Tribune has described the ice cream as "Smurf-blue, marshmallow-sweet, and tasting remarkably like Froot Loops and Fruity Pebbles". Blue Moon ice cream is one of the flavors which make up Superman ice cream.[1]
Blue Moon is found mainly in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. It is found less frequently in Indiana; Iowa; Illinois; Ohio; and Erie, Pennsylvania, and has reportedly been available (either in the past or currently) in Missouri, western Pennsylvania (Jamestown Hunger Buster), upstate New York, Houston, Texas, Nebraska, and as far west as Wyoming and Arizona, Seattle and Washington. It's also found in California and in Colorado. As far south as Bradenton / Cortez, Florida. A possibly similar, possibly identical flavor has also been sold in Italy under the name "Puffo", which is Italian for "Smurf".

The varieties of Blue Moon vary in both color and flavor. Many aficionados of each variety of Blue Moon claim that their variety is the "real one," the "original," etc. Some dairies that make Blue Moon keep their ingredients a secret, adding to the mystique.
A number of different sources on the internet claim to know what flavor Blue Moon is. Since these sources disagree with each other, it is unclear which, if any, are correct. Suggested flavors for Blue Moon include: fruit, Fruit Loops, orange, pineapple, lemon, cherry, raspberry, cantaloupe, honeydew, peach, licorice, pistachio, coconut, almond, burnt almond, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cardamom, buttercream, custard, chocolate, vanilla, marshmallow, bubble gum, Blue Curaçao, Crème de cacao, Amaretto, cake frosting, cotton candy, cola, and various combinations of these flavors.
The USPTO does not list any trademarks for Blue Moon ice cream.

  • it's the blue part of superman ice cream. It's refreshing like a sherbet only creamy like ice cream. It's the only ice cream my wife ever buys so I'm kind of tired of it, but it's definitely delicious.

He meant the real midwest aka the states that at least touch the great lakes(plus maybe Iowa). Nebraska is just plain west.
