Mike Farrell on Rivals

  • "This is the earliest we have released a list this comprehensive ( he is talking about Rivals giving stars to about 200 kids for 2014 ) so it's very specific," ( no it isn't, its just a list of names in alphabetical order, didn't even bother to try and rank them..... rankings don't matter, but its more fun to look at iyam ) said Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell. "However, it's an alpha list because it is still very early in the process and there is still junior year football to be played. We have always been and always will be the industry leader in prospect rankings and players ( 247 has had ranks on 2014 kids for months, not sure as this makes Rivals the industry leader ) coaches and fans look to us for that accuracy so we will never rush lists out. ( blank sounds to me like Rivals is rushing to catch up to 247 by changing the way they are doing business )

    I have always disliked Mike, he sucks

    Rivals is an industry leader in $$$ because of what Lucky created and the credibility that being associated with Yahoo (for some reason) gives them. It definitely isn't because of their material.

    They have been on autopilot just counting the money for years now.

  • Mike is a good guy and a friend. That being said, there aren't many differences between the watch list and our Top247 or the Scout300 or the ESPN Watch List. You will see the same names on all of the lists 80-90 percent of the time. I am not sure waiting makes their rankings any more accurate or more importantly, I am not sure that it serves their users well because ultimately that's why we put the lists out- for you guys.

    I also think you have to judge rankings 3-4 years down the road.

    The last year I was with Rivals was when they went on this kick of pointing out that they wait longer in the year to release the rankings in order to be more accurate. Just BS IYAM.

    I want a number. I want to see stars. I want to get excited over my overrated recruits just as much as I want to complain about my underrated ones that make you all seem blind sometimes!!! biggrin

    I mean, I want stars for the 2015 guys next week. Get on it! lol

  • Farrell's a good analyst, but like everyone else says, he's a douche. Like, Jamie Newburg douche. 247 is the best with rankings. They have the heavy hitters backing that up. JC, Barton, etc....not even close. It's really not up for debate and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I would support Farrell making the switch over here though if it meant nobody else had to leave. I've actually learned a lot from the guy over the years. He's good at breaking things down so that even guys like me can understand them.

    Yeah, 247 is the best. Even Scout has declined recently. Especially in regards to coverage for my team. And ESPN is..well...ESPN.

  • I broke it down and as I suspected, there isn't a whole lot of difference between the two lists and almost 90 percent of the prospects on the Rivals list already had ratings from 247Sports.

    I am not saying who is more accurate or not as that will be judged in time. We feel there is validity and value to you guys, the fans, in all of the well-known recruit rankings lists.

    But it isn't as if we are blindly throwing rankings on players just to get attention. If that were the case, we must have been very, very lucky because it seems others agree with us on a lot of players.

    It would be easy to say that, but I know that's not the case. Those guys are at the same events we go to and work just as hard as we do on these things. We just have different philosophies on things and if we make a call on a ranking, we want to get it out as quickly as possible.

    You look through our commit lists for all of the schools- MAC, Sun Belt, you name it- we have those guys graded and ranked. It's not that way elsewhere. That's fine, though, and is one way to do it. Heck, I worked there and I wanted to do things that way when I did. It's all about philosophy and there is no right or wrong.

    Which is exactly why I felt the need to defend ours.
