4 reasons to have playoff games at neutral sites: 1. Stadium size: some stadiums are too small to host such an important event--hello TCU, Oregon, OKST, Boise St! 2. Local infrastructure: again, some college towns are just too small to host such an enormous event that will generate enormous amounts of revenue for the local businesses. In fact, most college towns are too small. 3. Stadium location: players don't want to play in an ice bowl, and fans don't want to attend a game in freezing weather--this is a platitude which has support from all of the major existing bowls. 4. Current conference championship games are played at neutral sites and no fans from the higher ranked team complain that they're losing their *competitive advantage*; as are all of the games in the NCAA basketball tourney, etc.

You really don't think that northern fans wouldn't want to attend A SEMIFINAL game if it was cold? lol Come on now...

Tiger Stadium, Bryant Denny, Jordan Hare, and The Swamp aren't?

I have actually had a number of Tide fans say that by and large Bryant Denny is not that raucous. They cite that there is a very large number of old timers who attend the games and it dampens the experience.

another reason why it won't happen if they don't agree on neutral-site games. I say give the entire playoff to Jerry's world and call it a day. Best stadium, huge media market, enough hotel rooms and 4 major airports to travelers.

Who wants to watch a game in 30 degree weather with possible snow?

I do. Some of the most memorable college football games I've attended were in the snow.

Exactly. Games in those temperatures are awesome.

Leads to a tough as nails hard hitting game, where everything must be earned.

It also has a butt load of southerners. Plus travelling from Bama to ATL is easier than say Wiscy to ATL.

Rotating Neutral Sites makes the most sense.

Agreed. There is absolutely no reason why Lucas Oil Stadium and Ford Field couldn't host one of these neutral site games. The Final Four and Super Bowl has been held in both locations recently during the winter, and both drew big crowds.

Rotating the neutral site games is the only way to do it, just like the FF and the SB.

True Indy and Detroit would be great. East Lansing and Wisconsin? Not so much. Yalls commish has been saying he wants to keep the Rose Bowl as is and that is a hold up.

Depends on what the goal is. If it's to sell out the game, I guarantee that both Wisconsin and MSU would sell out those games. I don't think attendance is an issue, at least not with those examples.

Like an SEC team wouldn't be the higher seed anyways...

Agree. So why are schools like Alabama against home field advantage? IMO schools are going to regret the decision to make the national semifinals neutral site games. There is no free lunch and it is going to hurt attendance somewhere in the system. I have had Michigan season tickets for years and go to all the home games. I also usually make it to one regular season road game each year. And I go to the major bowl games. But the fact that I already have begun to skip the smaller bowl games shows I'm at my limit.

Last year, the B10 added a conference championship game at a neutral site. If they now decide to have the national semifinal games at neutral sites, I will have to take time off of work and travel to two or three additional ultra premiium priced games within a matter of weeks in some years. That is too much. It turns something that is supposed to be enjoyable into a chore. And I promise I am not the only person who feels this way. Maybe I will just stop going to regular season road games. Or maybe I will have to choose between the conference championship game and the national semifinal. Or I can just stop going to bowl games altogether. But with a career and a family, I can only travel to so many football games a year. Enough is enough.

  • Why couldnt you have an outdoor game up north at say Soldier Field or Lambeau Field? Teams in the NFL from down south come up north to play games there in December and January. And believe it or not the games sell out. It would be great to have games out there, dont see a negative

I honestly don't see a negative to it either. They'd be guaranteed sellouts.

b/c all things being equal people prefer warmer weather to colder weather. (I'm assuming your question was sincere, but may not be since my answer seems so obvious.)

Exactly. There is a reason that the P12 went with home field advantage for their conference championship game ... because it was a guaranteed sellout. And it worked perfectly last year. Their were no logistics problems or empty seats and Autzen was rocking. I hope the B10 watches the P12 model and at some point revisits its decision to hold our conference championship game at a neutral site. The great stadiums in the B10 is one of the big things that make CFB special. Moving the games to sterile NFL stadiums which all pretty much look alike is a waste of money and a mistake.

I get the warm weather argument, especially if we were talking about Northern fans and one trip/game. Getting out of the North for a week during the winter and heading someplace warm is fantastic. And it's relatively easy to do even with families over Christmas/New Years. Most people take time off work over the holidays anyway and kids are on break from school.

But it's entirely different asking fans from the North to do it twice in a month. And families with kids are not going to pull their kids out of school for a semifinal game. Also, I would think that "going someplace warm" would hardly be a big deal for fans from the South who live in warm weather year round. All of the major bowl games are already in the South and West. Even under the Delany Plan, one or both of the semifinal games and the championship game probably would be in the South or West. What we are basically talking about is maybe one semifinal game a year in a cold weather locale. And fans from the South consider that unthinkable.

The Super Bowl has succeeded in places like Indy, Detroit, and NYC next, why can't college football be the same?

I'm not arguing for outdoor games, just saying that games shouldn't be played in SEC territory every year. Having a rotation of like Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, California, Michigan, Indiana would be fair for everybody.

And sure it matters where games are played, in a place like Florida it's unlikely Stanford would be very well represented, where it's like a home game for many SEC teams. That shouldn't be tolerated.

In the last 6 BCS title games.... Alabama traveled to the Rose Bowl in 2009. Florida to Phoenix in 2006. Auburn to Phoenix in 2010. 2 times it was played in SEC territory where the opposing team had to travel further than SEC teams. The final matchup was Alabama vs LSU a wash. So 60% of the 5 BCS title games involving SEC vs other teams... The SEC team traveled further. They won all 5.
