Mizzou: $72M Stadium Expansion, 6K Seats

  • New conference, new demands: Expecting a surge in attendance following its defection from the Big 12 to the SEC, Missouri announced plans today for a $72 million renovation project that will add at least 6,000 new seats to Memorial Stadium, expanding total capacity to 77,000.

The plan – announced on the same day as a "major private gift" to the Mizzou athletic department – calls for 5,200 bleacher seats on the stadium's east side, along with 800 to 900 premium seats and the obligatory addition of new luxury suites on the west side, sales of which are expected to fund most (if not all) of the construction. A newly expanded concourse at the stadium's north entrance will also provide room for another seating increase at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Not sure I get this move. They don't regularly sell out games, why add? Sure, the SEC is going to create more demand. But they don't know how much yet. I'd think a couple seasons above 90% capacity would be good first. They averaged just over 62K last season. As the article points out, that's a bit higher than their 2010 numbers but still down from '09 and '08.

    Oh well.

  • Missouri hardly ever sold out in the first place. What happens to those extra 6,000 seats when they are regularly 7-5?

I'm sure all that empty space will look great on TV.

  • Part of it probably is knowing that the SEC teams travel as a whole better than the Big Twelve teams did.

Capacity is 71K, they're trying to bump to 77K.

17K seats is a lot to make up, particularly when they're expected to take a couple years to really compete.

  • It would be like WVU adding 6,000 seats which would put us at 66,000. WVU has had a lot of success lately, which has resulted in a lot of sellouts at the stadium, but the demand just isn't there in such a small state to justify adding seats right now. Missouri never won the Big 12, rarely sells out their stadium, and looks to have even worse success in the SEC, yet adds 6,000 seats.

Just seems like a waste of money, but what do I know?

i agree with that. Their fans will disappear when they regularly get embarrassed in the SEC.

I bet the season tickets have had more sold this season compared to last season. Just them entering the SEC is going to get their fans to want to see more games in person this year. Add that to the fact that SEC travels very well and it's a new school in the conference to us too. I think they will be fine.

  • It's been in the works for a while and is just first in line of a ton of renovations. Season tickets are sold out, university enrollment is at an all-time high, and SEC teams are sure to bring more fans (Bama and UGA say 15k each), so it makes sense. It's a lot of money, but they wouldn't have had it without the SEC. The big donation, which is set for tomorrow, is being predicted as high as a quarter of a billion and was contingent upon a conference move.

If they are expecting 7-5 they are screwed.

  • Ole Miss is spending $80 million on seats for- immediately, 6,000 seats- though say that there could be more added later.

  • what a joke of a school. the visiting SEC teams are going to have more fans there than mizzou fans
