More Realignment Issues - WVU

  • This whole thing just keeps getting worse and more stupid. I assume the Big 12 has a backup plan until they can get WVU in.

    From Greg Swaim's twitter:
Luck and #WVU told #Big12 they would pay whatever it takes to get out of the #BigEast, but now it appears they don't have enough cash.

He also said that this is confirmed by WVU's radio guy.

There are going to be teams that scramble to get schedules filled when this dust settles.

  • Good move for Boise....they probably get an automatic BCS yearly...well, at least until the big east is booted out.

As for WVU...how much is the Big East asking? The same as for Pitt and Cuse?

  • I think Pitt, Syracuse and WVU will end up staying for 2012 and being let out the next year. The new Big East teams are joining in 2013 and they need to stay at 8.

What would the Big 12 do? They need 10 teams to be a viable conference don't they?

Only need 8.....which is why the Big East needs to stay at 8 until new teams join in 2013.

  • WVU doesn't have enough money? Laughable. Is that why donors are offering "whatever it takes" to get out? Whoever said that is wrong, and Greg Swaim is the worst guy to get information from.

WVU will be in the Big 12 next season. The Big East is trying to save this conference. After next season Rutgers, UCONN, and Louisville will be leaving as well. What then?

The Big East CANNOT force WVU to stay. They can't. WVU is the 14th most profitable team in the country. Pretty sure money isn't an issuelol

ssshhhhhh....... Aggies don't like truth and facts.

Not to mention they are still paying RC Slocum, now they will be paying Sherman, and a new coach and also have to pay a 20+ million buyout to get out of the Big 12.

Nah. We have to pay a 20m exit fee from the Big 12 and a 5 m buyout yet we can go out and spend a ton on a new coach.

They're combining funds with Clemson and FSU to buy 2 spots in the SEC. Each team will cycle through the east, then west, then off year.

The money thing confused me as well..
    According to this (http://businessofcollegesports.com/2011/06/20/which-football-and-basketball-programs-produce-the-largest-profits/)
WVU is 23rd in football (24th including basketball with Louisville in there)

At the same time I don't understand how they can't be forced to stay. There is a waiting period to leave that WVU agreed with. These lawsuits won't be finished in time for next year and I would imagine an injunction would go against WVU due to the damage 7 teams would cause the Big East.

I have no info outside of assumptions on that, but just something I don't understand. With the change of venues to be argued, the motion to dismiss and then the actual trial who knows when it could finalize. I imagine the Big East will drag it out to keep WVU in until after 2012.

And what happens when WVU just says FU and leaves anyway? They cannot force them to stay. That is impossible. The only thing the courts will do is finally give WVU a price to pay. That is why WVU sued. Big East wouldn't put a price tag on leaving, so WVU sued. A judge in West Virginia is NOT going to force WVU to stay in the Big East when Marinatto breached the contract as well.

    What was Marinatto's breech?
What happens if the fee from the courts is too high for WVU to pay what happens then?
Can the courts not let them play in the Big 12 or how is the fine enforced?

The AP said that WVU wants the cases done by June 30th. The Big East will drag it on beyond that and will WVU risk leaving and having to deal with the penalties of a lost lawsuit that could be more than expected?

(and note that I am not arguing just saying what I have read since I have little legal knowledge)

TCU was let out of the 27 month wait. I know the Cinci board as been hearing that the TCU situation is different. It isn't different. They had signed the contract. Why do you think they paid the $5 Million? For fun? Marinatto let them out, so the Big East cannot force WVU to stay. That is how the judge will see it.

WVU will have the money, that is not an issue. There is money flying in from every direction right now. A new baseball field is being constructed, expansion to Mountaineer Field, Coliseum renovations, ect... There is also certain donors that have put their donations straight into a pool of money that will be used for the buyout whenever Meatball decides to drop this whole thing.

Not even sure why Meatball is trying. Louisville, Rutgers, and UCONN are as good as gone after next season.

That's nice of him to do. Wonder why he waited until Pitt and Syracuse announced they were leaving? Oh that's right, he is a basketball guy from Providence. He doesn't give a damn about football and never has. San Diego St. screams Big EAST.
