Most athletic athletes?

Close, water polo is swimming plus rugby plus soccer.

I've seen multi-sport athletes get out of a pool gassed after a water polo try out.

water polo is insane, they tread water while kicking and punching the guy next to them.. all while balancing a ball on their hand.

  • I'll probably get dooked on, but gymnasts need to be agile, flexible, strong and have great cardio to get through those routines over and over and over again.

I played hockey, once you get good enough at skating its pretty effortless... and a lot of the time you're away from the action just cruising... treading water, even when away from the ball, is tough as hell in water polo.

No contact league without a blue line is different. You "cruise" in the NHL, you'll end up a part of the board.

Not doubting water polo it seems rough but take a few cross checks. Like I said I've never played and don't know much about the sport. We didn't have water polo in N.E Ohio.

What LOL?Name me one football player that could go be a top level basketball player right now?I can name several basketball players that would dominate football right now.

You are making an argument based upon your definition of "athleticism, " which you haven't even stated. As someone who has trained countless professional athletes in both sports, based upon the metrics we(s&c coaches) use football players are generally superior.

So they should easily transition their superior athleticsim to basketball right?Name some football players that would be topflight NBA players.Should be easy since their superior right?

When I think athletic I think "explosive" or someone that would excel in the Decathlon as it is 10 different events that measure various aspects of athleticism. A RB, DB, or WR are guys that I think of as explosive but would also do well in the Decathlon.

If you excel in this event..... You have all-purpose, well-rounded athleticism.

Most everyone I know when we say athletic..... We mean "explosive, powerful, fast and/or quick". Basketball is a lot of "skill" than just natural, raw athleticism.

I guarantee you there are a lot more guys in the NFL that would have been very good college basketball players than there are NBA guys who would have been good college football players. You can count on one hand the number of NBA guys(Lebron, Derrick Rose, Westbrook, Nate Robinson) who have the type of explosiveness that most NFL skill position players have.

Nobody is saying you are wrong, but on what are you basing your assertion?

Basketball players would excel in a Decathlon type of environment imo.The only thing they lack is brute strength.Brute strength is not necessarily needed to play basketball.Speed, flexibility, balance, dexterity, ups and ball control are more important. It's for a basketball player to go play football than it is for a football player to go play basketball.

In the late 1980s/early 1990s ABC (I think it was ABC) used to have the Foot Locker SlamFest with athletes from different sports. I recall Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Chris Carter, Michael Irvin, Kenny Lofton, Barry Bonds and Mike Powell having some nasty dunks.

The difference in power(rate of force production) is significant between football and basketball players. It is not only strength, but flat out speed and also vertical jump. On average, non-lineman football players have higher verticals than basketball players and there are only a handful of guys in the NBA with the speed of the average NFL DB/S/WR/RB. I have measured thousands of them.

Basketball has some great athletes, as well as track.

But, football players are just unique athletes. And there are alot more of these unique athletes in the sport of football.

I cant believe these guys believe swimming/water polo/hockey are even close to basketball, track, or football.

Pitching is one of the most explosive movements in sports. Repeating a delivery 100 times to perfection also requires supreme propriception and athleticism.

Have you ever run a marathon in under 3 hours? No, but it doesn't mean every Kenyan out there is a better athlete.

You people act like treading water is the hardest thing ever. I'm not saying water polo isn't difficult, but I'm a very good swimmer, and am pretty sure if I grew up playing water polo that scholarship would have been a lot easier to come by than a D1 football or basketball scholarship.

    Water Polo

Just because something is strenuous doesn't mean it's athletic. If that were the case marathon runners or David Blaine would take the cake. Water polo is drawn from a tiny pool (excuse the pun) of athletes that don't us their innate natural abilities (running jumping). Is it a tough sport? Sure. If you had those guys run athletic tests would they perform highly? No.
