Most athletic athletes?

  • Clarkw267 said...

Have you ever run a marathon in under 3 hours? No, but it doesn't mean every Kenyan out there is a better athlete.

You people act like treading water is the hardest thing ever. I'm not saying water polo isn't difficult, but I'm a very good swimmer, and am pretty sure if I grew up playing water polo that scholarship would have been a lot easier to come by than a D1 football or basketball scholarship.

you glide and stand around a lot playing hockey.

You get hit more in a football game.
Your run more in a Football game.
You jump more in a football game.

    Ignorance is bliss

Water polo probably is a tough sport.

But, if your highschool senior yr book has a pic of a water polo player, next to "best athlete," your highschool probably sucked in sports.

I mean I dont know too many people that would pick Roudy Gaines over Bo Jackson.

Where the fvck were you playing hockey like that at? Not watching it. It's not like that in OHSAA. Who just stands on skates?

    Buck that

  • When I read Water Polo, I giggled. Then I remembered back in HS, our gym class spent a week doing water sports. Water Polo kicked my butt and I was in midseason basketball shape. It's up there with crew, and combat sports.

As far as most athletic sport, it's parkour and gymnastics. Explosion, strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, speed, leaping ability, fear control.

Hockey isn't close to football buddy.

    good point on parkour.

Harder hits happen in hockey. Players are going at much faster speeds, so the hits are harder. Hand-eye coordination at its finest, more endurance is needed.... Just stop.

Um okay? I'm not advocating for hockey.

Alonzo said it best, just because it is difficult to do it doesn't make you the best athlete.

Hitting major league pitching is one of the toughest things to do in sports. Doesn't make baseball players the best athletes.

Sorry if this struck a chord for you aquatic sports people out there, but it's just not even close.

    Basketball or Football, that's all.

I have never played hockey, but I did play college football and have done s&c work with professional athletes in both sports. Hockey players are pretty bad dudes.

how do receivers catch balls, how do players tip toe sidelines.... hand eye foot eye coordination, so that argument is out the window.

Sports Science proved American Football to be the hardest hitting sport in the world.

FYI, John Brenkus is not by any stretch of the imagination a sports scientist or a scientist of any kind. Always curious how that guy got his own show on ESPN, he has zero background in sports or any type of science(he is a filmmaker and TV guy). I'd take anything on that show with a HUGE grain of salt, it is for entertainment purposes(obviously).

  • The most athletic sport is basketball. Second is football, and third is hockey.

  • Having played hockey my entire life, I can assure you that it isn't "effortless gliding." Pay attention to any non-beer league game and watch how long shifts last. NHL games will even tell you this stat for players sometimes. They will usually last on average, about 1 minute at most. This is mostly because if you stay out much longer, you will quickly become badly gassed and then be a liability. Overtime playoff shifts can be as short as 25 seconds because your legs leave you real quick at that point. Hockey is a very physically demanding sport and its high level players are incredible athletes.

EDIT: I am surprised nobody has said boxing or anything, yet. Unless I missed it. I guess MMA was covered.

I don't know. I think it's pretty safe to say that high level athletes are almost always absolute freaks, no matter the sport.

One thing however that always annoyed me about this debate is that they will say football due to DB's, RB's or WR's and then rail on baseball for fat pitchers or first baseman. You can't pick and choose here. What about centerfielders running balls down and stretching out completely on a dive to make a play or shortstops making some catch and throwing the dude down at first all in the same motion? What about fatass lineman with the belly's hanging out of their uniform?

btw i damn love football. I am just trying to stick up for baseball because it gets ragged on in debates like these.

That's why so many football players play basketball as a second sport.

    Hockey.

    This or Water Polo.

I know most of you know nothing about Water Polo but imagine swimming really hard, treading water for a few seconds and getting yourself consistently at least 2 feet out of the water for a long extended period of time .... serious stamina needed there.

Edit: I feel like an idiot now ... I have never see anyone else bring up water polo and now I see it is widely discussed in this thread.
