Movies based on books

  • Honestly I don't even know why I watch movies that are based on books that I have already read. I mean they ALWAYS end up as a big fvcking disappointment. I have been pumped about watching this Hunger Games movie after reading the trilogy a little over a month ago and they just brutalized it.

That movie could have been done so much better that it's almost laughable. I knew that it was going to be lacking when it was rated PG-13 but they just got stuff BLATANTLY wrong that they had no reason to change. What a disappointment. If people actually watched the movie but haven't read the books, don't blame the author for it. The trilogy is a real good one and I couldn't put the books down.

I'm actually half pissed at this point.

Totally agree, movies based on books suck if you have read the book. I think it's because of all the elements you get from a book that no matter who the director/producer can never be touched on, such as a characters thoughts. There's no way you can incorporate those in a movie. I also think that the entertainment value they try to put on movies muddles some of the best aspects of the story. Plus when you read something yourself you create your own visualizations, and when they end up being way off what you expected you come away even more disappointed.

  • Watched it with the girlfriend the other night. I was put off by the computer animals and fake fire.

Why do they have such technology and where are the hungry people?

It would take more explaining than this but the short story is that the Capitol is the only place with all of that technology, at least until the third book, and the 12 districts outside of the capitol all have issues with starvation except for maybe district 2.

  • It's weird because I'm coming from the opposite direction on this one. I watched the movie first, thought it was great, and that made me read the trilogy. And I thought the movie actually worked a little better than the book in some ways. Although to be honest it's been so long now I'm not sure I could really point out why. Also on a semi-related note, I wasn't a big fan of the last book. I didn't like the ending and thought that some of the characters' demises felt way too forced.

I will say I do feel that way on most movies based on books. I couldn't stand some of the Harry Potter movies (especially the forth) because I felt like they didn't include enough plotlines from the books. But by the time the last three movies came out it'd been so long since I read the books that I could actually enjoy the movies for what they were, so that was nice. Off the top of my head though, Shutter Island, Watchmen, and almost anything adapted from a Stephen King novel come to mind.

  • I have not seen or read the hunger games. I have read many books that became movies and they are always disapointing. Books are always better.

  • The Green Mile by Stephen King and the Lord of the Rings were the only movies that were as good as the books.

You forgot Shawshank Redemption! Excellent movie and novella. People forget Stephen King isn't just a horror writer. The guy can write a story.

Stephen King is a beast of a writer.

  • Anybody read the "Odd Thomas" series by Dean Koontz? I actually like his stuff better than Stephen King's and someone told me that this was the next books I should buy.

Totally agree with you on that. I thought the last book was the worst of the 3. Not sure how they're going to do the movie, but I can tell you now, it won't be good.
I did like the Hunger Games movie. Yea they cut a bunch of stuff out, but all in all, it was pretty close to the book. I wasn't a fan of the camera movements though, that shiz almost made me sick.

I agree with the ending of the third book and the forced endings of some of the characters. If they try and keep the third book at PG-13 then it will be awful. I was really disappointed in how they portrayed the killings in the first movie compared to the book. The closest thing to actually seeing someone killed was the Rue/Marvel scene and you didn't see anything really. The tracker jacker thing with Glimmer was dulled way down as well. I don't know how they are going to fake some of the stuff in book 3.

I don't really like any of King's horror stuff but his other stuff is really good.

It's kind of hit or miss with me and King's horror books. Some are awful and some are awesome. Pet Semetary, Cujo and It are some of my favorite horror books of all time. There are others that were just awful and I kept waiting on them to get good and next thing you know the book was over.

I've never read a Dean Koontz book I didn't like though. When we talked about "The Dark Tower" series I could have sworn that it was a Koontz series but I was about 15 when I read them. I completely forgot that those books were by King and I think those are the only science fiction/fantasy books that I have ever read from him. I have almost completely forgot the storylines but I heard they are making movies out of that trilogy so I'm just not going to reread them.

If I reread the books it would just absolutely ruin the movies. Actually outside of Shawshank and Green Mile, King's books have been more brutalized in the movies than any other out there I think. "It" was okay and the one about the devil that owned the antique shop was pretty good but other than that.

  • lord of the rings trilogy movies were awesome, as were the books.

the hobbit is also looking amazing. book was better than lotr, imo, so i got high hopes for movie.

also, the game of thrones series has been very good, though i must admit i've only read book 1 and it was after seeing the 1st season, so it probably wasn't as good as if i'd read it before hand.

  • The reason why the Hunger Games was really disappointing was solely a business decision.

It had a budget of $70M (the average summer blockbuster movie is at least $200M).

Luckily Catching Fire should have the appropriate budget.

I agree with you. I read Hunger Games, but haven't watched the movie because I expect it to suck. I loved the Girl w/ Dragon Tatoo series, but the movie really, really was boring. It's pretty much the same every time...movies never as good as the book, so I quit expecting them to be a long time ago.

Just to be clear, and I'm sure I just misunderstood you, the old Dark Tower books were actually finished in recent years, so there are 5-6 of them I think. I read them all back to back, so I lost count. (i.e., it's not just a trilogy anymore)

Hopefully they will actually get a little more in depth with the killings in the movie. I was shocked when I heard that it was a PG-13 movie and wondered how the hell they made it happen. Well I found out real quick. Hoping that we get to see Jena Malone naked as Johanna Mason in Catching Fire as well. Seemed like she was always getting naked when reading the books. If they are dead set on keeping the entire trilogy at PG-13 then I fear the next two will be even worse than the first.

They do have some good actors in Catching Fire though. Jena Malone as Johanna, Tony Shalhoub as Beetee, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbea, and the chick at the beginning of Pulp Fiction as Wiress. Time will tell. I don't think it comes out until next November though.
