Must read books......

  • I know they are epic poems, but the Iliad and the Odyssey are must-reads and very entertaining. Beowulf is fun too, very short and something you can easily read in a couple of hours.

We had to do this asinine project on Beowulf for honors English in high school so I've always hated it because of that, but it is entertaining and an easy read.

    Other recommendations:

    Ayn Rand...any of it

I've never read any of Rand's stuff, though I am a Republican. You might find entertainment in reading a book that is derived from pure, unadulterated hatred of her, which was written by a friend of mine. Extremely bright guy, but it was his first book and he'd recently made the switch from the extreme right to the extreme left. I found it difficult to get through, but part of that is probably because I really don't give a s^*t about Rand, her followers, or her detractors....I read it because my friend wrote it. Here you go:

If u like politics you should read Doatoyevskys Demons (the possessed) basically predicts Facism And Stalin in the 1860s. (really weird child molestation scene in it though)

Tolstoys "the Cossacks" and " the death of hadji Murat" are good shorter intros to Tolstoy.

Russian history is similar to the US when it Comes to "cowboy and Indians" stuff.

That's one part of the world I know next to nothing about. I may read those soon. This thread should never die, since I want to refer back to it when looking for something to read.

Dostoyevsky's "The Gambler" is a very short book (maybe 100 pages) and a nice intro to his writing and a fun autobiagraphical story about an addicted gambler in the mid 1800's. Dos liked to gamble

Yes, you can buy on Amazon or in pretty much any ebook form. I tell you now, he's not yet a master at writing, but his research skills are fantastic. He does make points that, as a Republican, I can see how I wouldn't want to just line up and follow Rand.

He had been toying with the idea of writing this book, and when the tornado ripped through Tuscaloosa I guess it brought his angle into better focus. Being from Tuscaloosa, I was hoping for more about that day, but that's really not the point of the book.

I'll check that out first. Good way to get familiar before tackling a tome.

Great book. Took about a month of reading a couple of hours after work every night. But highly, highly recommend. King takes about 100 pages to truly set the scene, then you're hooked.

I really want to see the mini series that was done in the early 90's now.

  • Anything by Orson Scott Card.

Particularly, as mentioned a couple times, the Ender's Game series is phenomenal. It honestly changed the standard that I judge books against. Character development is second to none. There's nothing inappropriate, so it can be read by teens, but I thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult.

Not sure if any of you lazy bastards run, if you do , then the book Born to Run, if not already on the list is a very good read. Hell I hate running, but the book was inspiring. Especially the part were they made a energy drink from rattlesnake venom and aguava(sp?)
