Bigger than football but should shut the program down for 2 to 3 years?

I wish it was permanent. Tear Beaver Stadium down and make it a memorial hospital or something like that for victims of such actions.

  • NCAA is not only punishing the student athletes but also the students, vendors, businesses, everyone associated with that university. Its blasphemy

But it is bigger than football. That really makes a lot of sense.

tough shit, their hero JoePa should have thought of that when he turned a blind eye to child rape. Hes the one to blame not freaking Emmert

No, what was done to the victims was blasphemy and the cover up. Had the school's officails not covered it up, IMO the school and team would not be punished, Jopa's statue would still be standing, his memory untarnished.

How do you know it would have? There is no guarantee that they would have been hammered.

Paterno was how old in 1998? A seventy something year old with a high profile assistant doing what Sandusky did? It would have cast doubts on Paterno's future. Hard to predict exactly how it would have played out, but it certainly would have brought negative attention to the program.

Regardless, I think punishing them sends the right message. Football can never be that powerful.

So shutting down a football program is the answer? People who are calling for football sanctions are minimizing the issue at hand. We're much beyond football at this point. We're talking about children being raped. It's insulting to hear people say that sanctions are necessary. The focus should be shifted towards the victims of child abuse and their families, not of a football program.

Football team alone make $17 billion per year for the Pennsylvania economy. Not to mention these sanctions will knock out half of the entire athletic department (no more swimming, wrestling, etc.). But what King Emmert says, goes.

  • To be honest I think Kansas had it right when they fired Phog Allen back in the day. At a certain point people are too old and their decision making can be suspect. No reason for any football coach to be older than 75. Certainly not 84.

Where did I say the football program should be shut down?

Sanctions are necessary though, they put football ahead of those victims, this can not and should not go without some action.

Hell, demote PSU to the suck-belt for life, 10 years with 50 scholarships, move UofL or whom ever the BIG-10 wants to replace PSU and so on for each confrence. Not fair to the fans or players, but life isn't fair.

If you don't see how taking the capital from the football program and helping victims isn't bigger than football, not sure what to say them.

I'm glad monetary value should be the measuring stick. headslap

Edit: The entire BOD of the NCAA representing all 1,281 member institutions gave Emmert the authority. He isn't acting like a rogue arbiter.

  • If the NCAA is going to punish schools for crimes committed on campus then why did they not get involved in the murder of yeardley love at uva? The NCAA governs the rules and regulations of its members. Go read the article on espn.com from a former chairman of the NCAA

Who said it was? I was commenting on the statement I quoted. He said PSU football effects a lot of people, so I gave a stat... Why are you being a d***head about it?

Edit for your edit: Well now that I know that 22 people on the Board from 22 other schools thought it was right to put thousands of people out of jobs in PA, I feel much better!

It's not the crime itself that has PSU in hot water, it's the cover up by the Coaches, AD and President.

I think the point is, Emmert is rushing to judgement, doesn't fully know the ramifications of what he's about to do, and may regret it. Probably not, but we'll see. He's ruining lives here (totally separate from the football team) and has already received warning of lawsuits against him because of his decision.

What the hell? UVA should get punished because of a random act of violence by one of its student-athletes? Is that seriously what you think this is about, and think that is the best comparison?

  • Everyone is in an uproar and somebody has to pay. It's ignorant and stupid and a mob mentality but that's the way it is right now. Never mind the fact that everyone who was responsible will pay through the legal process, they aren't visible enough and people want to see blood. It's like an old fashioned lynch mob.

and the coaches, AD and President are already facing a worse fate then anything the NCAA could possibly do. NCAA could do nothing and those responsible would get a far harsher penalty then any AD, President or coach involved in any past infraction issue.

except our lacrosse staff had nothing to cover up and to keep secret for many years, all to win more games at any cost. good try though.
