NFL Draft: Stephon Gilmore

  • I just wanted to see what peoples opinion of Gilmore is. I have started seeing him mocked in the top 5 picks which I think is ridiculous, analysts are saying he is #1 CB now. I never thought he had the coverage skills to be an NFL corner and thought he would have to move over to safety.

Hey Trojans, LSU's 74 are better than your 75.

  • Nah. The only person who has him top 5 is Greg Cosell which is not really a real mock draft. He doesn't take into account anything except his perceived needs of the team, and tape. No character etc.

I hope the Bills get Gilmore.

  • DIdn't see much of him this past year but he was owned often as a Sophomore. FSU's receivers treated him like a Fr 3 star

FSU had 90 passing yards in that game between 2 QBs. No WR had more than 25 receiving yards.

  • Ha, going back and looking at that game even more, Gilmore had an INT and completed a pass for 29 yards.

PT care to give me an assessment of his game? I've read the scouting reports, but would like to hear from someone who watched pretty much every game live.

  • Go look at the highlights of the game. Gilmore gets trucked twice and stiffarmed.

  • But to answer OP, though he had some rough spots as a sophomore due to coverage break downs behind him, I think he's the clear #2 CB. He struggled with finding the ball for the first game or 2 in 2011, but really had a solid year.

He's started for 3 years, he's physical, he's big, and if you question his speed watch him chase down Rainey in the UF game from 2011. I think his tangibles outside of games sometimes make people have a tendency to overrate him, but there's no reason he shouldn't be a solid NFL corner. HOF like a Champ Bailey? Unlikely. But a long, solid career should be expected.

  • If you go back and watch our 2010 regular season games, you'll see some stuff that looks like he's getting toasted. Most of the time he was actually breaking off his assignment to cover for one of the safeties blowing theirs.

I'm not covering for him as a homer either, a lot of our fans were on him constantly and the coaches had to start defending him towards the end of the year because they weren't his mistakes a lot of the time.

Yep. Alot of times last season it looked like he got burned but he was supposed to have saftey help and he had a different responsibility in zone. Also he has only been playing CB 3 years. He was a fulltime QB in HS with series here and there on D. I dont think he should go ahead of Claiborn but I think he is the #2 CB and could go anywhere in the top 20 or so and as high
    as 7.

Trucked and stiff-armed to the tune of 90 yards passing. Scrub should quit football now.

  • Scouting report from SC fan.

Bills looking strongly at him at #10, want to know what we are getting.

What about 90yrds passing FOR THE ENTIRE team, with no single receiver having more than 25yrds, is evidence that your comment was even close to correct?

  • Jacksonville is looking hard at him with the #7 pick. I guess haters can keep hating because everyone said he would never go first round. He went to the combine and blew them away. He is going to make some team a very solid DB. South Carolina is DB U.

  • If a team needs a #2 CB, then Gilmore would fit nicely. I think when you get past Mo, that all the CBs have their strengths and weaknesses.

Dre seems to be the guy that has the prototypical size that the NFL wants and that will probably get him drafted high and he is a great tackler on the corner as well.

After that, I think it is a toss up between Gilmore and Jenkins. All 4 should go in the 1st round or definitely by the top of the 2nd round.

Not sure if Gilmore will be a team's #1 CB, but he is very versatile and could find an early starting spot at safety even if a team is deep at CB. Any team just looking to bolster their secondary would be a great fit, IMO.

What are your thoughts about him making plays? He had 4 INT's last year, but I've heard he isn't the proverbial playmaker? Bills need a solid corner who can make some plays, and stick with bigger more physical receivers. Does Gilmore fit the bill?

I would rather have a versatile guy that can cover more than someone that can make plays. I think that is a very overhyped title anyway. Players that are in position don't get thrown at as much to begin with.

I think he has good ball skills and would be a good fit in Buffalo. You guys are putting together a great defense and definitely just need a few finishing touches in the secondary and they could be dangerous. Perfect set up for a team in that weather going up against the Jets and Patriots in the division.

  • Gilmore was a very good corner in the SEC. He's in the discussion as the 2nd best corner available for sure. The sad part is, every single corner that comes out now will go to an NFL that doesn't allow them to be within 5 yards of the receiver without a bullshit flag being thrown. It's sad because it makes it hard to see how good some of these new guys are.

  • Gilmore is big AND fast. Another thing on gilmore, and maybe a key reason he is shooting up the board, is he is a VERY high character kid, very good in the film room, model student athlete. This comes across in the team interviews and has probably helped his stock a good bit.

We switched to more man in 2011 after 3-4 games and the D drastically improved. Prior to that and 2009-2010, check his tackle numbers. He was making 70-80 tackles per season from the CB spot because he gets involved in a lot of plays. He likes to get physical with WRs and can draw some flags (see Julio in Columbia/2010).

Edit: add that he was highly effective on corner blitzes for us too.

Can return punts as well, he just became too valuable to use there. Had an impressive run back on a fumble vs UGA in 2011 and on a blocked PAT vs Nebraska in the bowl game. Would have scored vs UGA but his lead blocker started show boating and slowed him down enough to get caught.
