  • The one that was just announced is redonkulous!

Almost as thin as the Air, retina display, 650m graphics, built in flash storage, 4lbs, 7 hour battery life, tig ol bitties!

    MildReTIDEation

  • And a starting price tag of $2199. Guess I'd better start saving...

  • I wonder what the 17" will start at. I use a 15" right now but I want to upgrade to a 17" to be my dedicated work computer, both on the go and when hooked up to my multi-monitor office setup.

I think the 17" may be discontinued. There has been no mention of it a the keynote.

Yeah, probably. I still like it.

Damn that's sound badass. I'm good with mine for another 5 years at so. I paid 1100 when my version just came out for the 15" screen.

That would suck, I as really looking forward to the bigger screen size for work. I thought about getting a work laptop AND a work desktop but with being able to multi-monitor from my laptop (and the fact portable/external HDs, SSDDs, dual monitoring, etc. have kind of made desktops obsolete IMO). grumble

These aren't my words, but a response I read to someone that was upset about losing the 17" option:

Either they use the larger pixels in larger numbers or they don't.
If they don't need larger pixels then it is possible to put the same pixels into a smaller space. In that case they are not taking anything away from those professional. It is the same functionality in lighter, more portable equipment. I don't know many professionals that need to move around that like lugging around stuff that is more heaving and larger than it has to be.

For example, the new Nikon 800 takes photos that are 7360 x 4912. What is going to be better at displaying all those pixels to the "pro". A 1920 x1200 screen or a 2880 by 1800 screen ? Similarly for high end video folks moving to 4K resolutions. Better on 1920 x1200 or 2880 x 1800 ?
(and if need a fancy external full size, standard pro studio monitor , then don't need a 17" screen http://www.aja.com/en/products/t-tap/#/overview )

If Apple killed off the 17" display and didn't add a higher res 15" screen that would be a regression. This can easily be moving forward if the rumored more high density screens roll out, but with a smaller form factor.

  • I just like the size 'cause I multitask while I work. Right now I work with my 15" MBP and a 23" HP L335. Generally I put work information (client specs, requests, etc.) and Internet windows on my MPB and my workspace (InDesign, Illustrator, etc.) on the HP. Don't get me wrong, I'm stoked about the screen quality (I love it when what's on my screen is almost exactly equal to the quality it will print at) but I just need the physical space. But that's okay, I can manage. I plan on saving up and purchasing a second monitor to run 3-wide with the MBP.

    agree

i admittedly never got a mac because i am stubborn and dont want to start over on a new OS and platform. (i know stupid)

and i know they are probably far superior machines and in my lifetime buying 15 PCs will cost much more than 3 or 4 macs but i just cant justify dropping 2 grand on a computer, especially when i am on my phone 99% of the time of internet usage at home

  • That is a very nice computer, but the baseline being $2199 and the other one being $2799. I am an Apple User, but I don't know if I can justify that price.

Now if my 5 year old MB Pro dies and I am stuck then maybe, but right now that still works for me so $2199+ just isn't worth it for me.

I'm about to make the switch to Mac. Been using them a lot in the labs at school. Not difficult once you figure out the special keys and such

I love my iMac. A couple generations old and still runs like a champ. Google will help you learn the different key shortcuts.

I actually have a PC desktop and PC Laptop, but I still think that new Macbook Pro is a badass machine. It isn't the most powerful, but its combination of screen, size, battery life, reliability and power is awesome.

I used to build all my own computers and wanted the absolute most speed and power, but as I get older and more professional, I find myself wanting the reliability and function of a Mac.

My current laptop is crazy fast, but is heavy and requires a cooling pad to use it.

That has basically been my thoughts for the past 10-15 years, but I am starting to think differently now.

I might buy one for my wife one day, but I will stick to Windows as long as they make them.

Plus I absolutely love building computers, so not only do I get a faster computer than that, but I also get the tremendous pleasure of building it.

But I understand your point, and I can respect that.
