Nirvana: Unplugged in New York

  • Is simply phenomenal. That is all.

  • Lake of Fire in that performance is one of my all time favorites. I think the song was originally done by the Meat Puppets but Cobain nailed it. I still have that CD.

  • It's great.

I prefer Nirvana: Live at the Paramount. It's a show from Halloween 1991.

One of my favorite musical experiences of all time.... imagine the few that were lucky enough to be at the show....

The meat puppets covers were badass....

My favorite is the closer... "Where Did you Sleep Last Night"... his voice starts breaking up like an overdriven tube amp. Gives me chills.

That CD is one of the few i still keep in my vehicle for a rainy day (aka when there's shi**y service on Spotify). Oh Me is an original by the Meat Puppets but it's my favorite song on the album. Lake of Fire is also great. Lead Belly's Where Did You Sleep Last Night is the undisputed masterpiece of the album. That version is absolutely haunting. You can actually hear the anguish in Cobain's voice. Brilliant, brilliant performance.

This is also bad ass. It was on Palladia a few nights ago.

  • The three covers---"Lake of Fire", "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", and "The Man Who Sold the World"---are done so well you wouldn't even know they were someone else's song. One of the best versions of "All Apologies" as well.

  • Oh yeah, good call on Man Who Sold the World.... one of the few times where the cover is better than the original in my opinion.

This is the blu ray they put out a year or so ago right? That's a really cool show.

  • My older sister is married to the drummer for a group called Verbena. Dave Grohl managed them, or something like that, and I have gotten to meet him a few times. It was real interesting hearing about his times with Nirvana.

Dave absolutely hates Courtney Love. Hate is actually an understatement of how he feels about her. He thinks she had a lot to do with his death and basically blames it on her. I have never heard someone talk so bad about another person in my life.

That's a shame... did you actually hear him speak like this? He seems like he has moved on so long ago that he wouldn't even bother.

Either way, he is probably right.... also saw on a recent documentary if he had one wish granted it would be to bring Kurdt back.

Yeah it was only once. I only met him about three times. Verbena split up so Dave Grohl and my brother in law aren't really in business together anymore. I would say that it was around 2001 when we had the discussion I am referring to. We were partying and he was smashed and just went off when she was brought up.

That's awesome man... you met a rock legend multiple times.... Dave Grohl is awesome. and he speaks the truth about that situation for sure...

He's a real cool guy. Down to earth and not pompous at all.

Yeah I remember a bunch of stuff that we talked about. Most of it was just shooting the shit about non-related things though. He did talk about his days with Nirvana for a little while though. Do you have some sort of specific question? I might be able to answer it.

No not really... just interested in his perspective about his days in Nirvana... (without revealing anything that he wouldn't want to be revealed)

Also interested in anything you remember him saying about other bands...

Or hell, just anything else that stands out to you.... it's a conversation with Dave Grohl for F**'s sake.

He talked about some of the other bands that were inspirations to him. Some of them would be what you wouldn't expect. His favorite band of all time was Motorhead. He was also a big fan of punk bands. He talked a lot about The Dead Kennedy's, Iggy and the Stooges and the Misfits.

He also said that he was a fan of Genesis. No BS

Yeah I read something where he basically quoted "f** elvis and keith richards, lemmy is the king or rock n roll"....

Big statement to say F Keith Richards...
