Most of this outcry is coming from the lawsuits, concussion research etc.. From what i understand 90% of kids that ever strap on a football helmet at a young age will never make it past the high school level. 90-95% of college football players will never see playing time in the NFL. I feel that these head injuries are accumilated over a players career hs,college and pros. So if you spend 15-20 years of your life playing football and getting paid millions to do it eventualy then you should play at your own risk and be aware of the conseqences and repercussions imo. I don't feel like the NFL should be liable for this.

    100% agreed.

The lawsuits are a joke. Every single player knows the consequences when they sign that contract for millions of dollars.

They do now, but I don't think they did for years. Again, it's like cigarettes; for a long time people had no idea they caused cancer, just like for a long time players had no idea the game could cause permanent brain damage. I'm not saying they didn't know it was dangerous, but there's the danger you see and the danger you don't know about. You've just got to let this thing ride itself out and let people come to grips with this new reality of the game, much in the same way that people still smoke even though they know the consequences.

If you polled all NFL players, I guarantee they'd be more concerned with not being able to walk upstairs from football than commiting suicide.

Personally, I'd be most worried about ending up like Ali.

Football creates far too much cashflow for it to be ever be banned.

    Definitely this.

Exactly how many players in the history of the NFL have had a concussions and how many ppl killed themselves? Junior took the ez way out he's a coward..

It's directly related to a disease. He was mentally ill and was in a dark, dark place. You can't fault the guy for that.

you would think that politicians have enough to worry about without sticking their nose into every aspect of our lives. there has always been an injury factor related to football. you play knowing what the risks are...that's the reason most professional football players make so much more money than an average person. we have a president now that seems to have an opinion on just about every damn thing. wish he would worry more about our economy, foreign policy, iran, healthcare, etc.. it's sad to say, but head injuries come with the territory. no one is making anybody play football. i love football and hope it never goes away. i feel badly for the early football players that did not understand the problem with head injuries.

That's not true. I didn't know what the risks were due to multiple concussions. Neither did Seau or any other guy for that matter until now.

That would start another Civil War. I would happily cut as many throats as I had to to get in back on the air. Don't mess with Bama football, brah.

This is caveman mentality. So you don't care about the well being of others? If your son ended up like Junior Seau or worse yet, Wayne Chrebet, you would be ok with that for your love of a sport???

I think it's just a situation of people didn't KNOW this was a potential result of playing football for their whole lives and they just don't know how to handle it yet. It's not quite like boxing (and, by proxy, UCF/MMA/etc.) where we've known for a bit that getting punched in the face for years can lead to issues down the road; we knew football was a hard hitting game but we're just now seeing that there is a POTENTIAL effect for people and we're just trying to decide (a) what we think about that and (b) what we can do about it.

It's a lot like when it was found out that cigarettes were found to cause cancer IMO. For YEARS no one thought they were an issue, and then all of a sudden, BAM. We just have to have discussions about it is all. It will pass IMO.

I agree, but how about all the non smoking in public restaurants in Cali, Jersey, NYC, etc... People thought NO WAY imaginable that the MIGHTY tobacco industry would stand for or allow that to happen. Well, guess what? People are MUCH MORE concerned for the health now a days than they were say 30 years ago. How many vegan options are there now? Vegetarian options? It's about a healthy lifestyle and people are going to do things that are better for their bodies.

Football is hazardous to your health, period. I don't care what level you're playing at, it's BEYOND dangerous. Look up the Purdue report and you'll be blown away. It's a matter of time before the government comes in and says, we aren't going to allow people to kill each other anymore for entertainment purposes. Baseball, basketball and soccer are already world sports and it's only a matter of time before they take over and weed out football.

I agree that people still smoke, but up here in Jersey it's much, much lower than in years ago. I mean, I don't know ANYONE of my friends that smoke and I couldn't say that 20 years ago. It's a health issue....

REally? How about the tobacco industry?

You're right, money is the backing correct? Well, when the government sees how many people are on meds, committing suicide, etc from concussions, they will put a restriction on it much like they did with tobacco because of the MEDICAL MONEY that it will cost us the taxpayers in the future.

I love football, man. I'm just sad to say that I think it's gonna be banned. It's a great sport, but should we as a race look out for our best possible means for health or entertainment? The risks in football are extraordinary and everybody knows it.

I just don't understand how we can put a guy into outer space yet we can't develop a helmet to prevent concussions??? banghead Very frustrating. Love to see them come up with a superman suit so to speak and NOBODY gets hurt and the sport lives on forever!

Look at it this way, if I told Jack Tatum there would be a day when there were rules like helmet to helmet and defenseless receiver draw not only flags, but fines as well, he would reply, "well, that's not football then. I have no idea what game you're talking about."

    CoachGomez214

  • The NFL brings in billions and billions of dollars. It's not going anywhere

The rules will be continually modified to make an attempt to keep the players safe but it won't be shut down. The government has no rights to try and regulate the rules of play in the NFL and certainly no right to shut it down. Come on people.

I called this last year and think that it's going to eventually happen. Football is going to be banned. I hate to say it, but it's true. When you look at all the rule changes and the direction of our society (well-being of humans), it's only a matter of time before the greatest sport is banished forever.

I played high school football in 1988. The helmet has changed little if all to this point. When do they try and find a way to change the equipment on the head, rather than implement more rules to "protect" the players.

It's sad to see guys like OJ Brigance, Junior Seau and Wayne Chrebet... It's not going to change and they're going to eventually ban sports like this and hockey.

Our children will be into Basketball, Baseball and Soccer as the world dominated sports. Well, to be honest, they already are.....

    Opinions?

ROFL no way, you not how much money football is worth? Not ever going to happen no way.

We're not in his place man. You can't say that EVERYBODY who commits suicide is a coward. How do we know how bad his nightmares were, sleep disorders, headaches, lack of emotions, loss of memory were???

I had a friend kill herself with a gun (one of my best friend's wife) and all we did was hug each, cry and said at least she now has the pain gone and hopefully she's at peace. I miss her to death and think about her almost every day.

I've seen some bad things man and you can't get certain things out of your head and regardless the help you seek, medication, etc... It's just overwhelming.

Ummm, the government is the government. They can shut down any sport they want if it passes in DC. It's called bills that get passed into law.

You think if I told people in the 70's it will be mandatory to wear a seat belt when they drive a car they would believe me? No way. You know how much insurance makes in this country???? It scoffs at football....
