Non Bama, AU, or Arky fans - Better coach Petrino or Chizik

  • I am conducting a highly scientific study on who the college football world views as the superior head coach, Bobby Petrino or Gene Chizik. Your input would be appreciated.

  • Given the lack of responses I will chime in as well.

    I would say Petrino. He hasn't had a great player like Newton (though Mallett was very good) and he's managed to get 10 wins consistently.

    At this point Chizik looks like he needed that superstar to have success. Good coach but not great coach at this point.

  • I am an AU fan so you can discount my opinions. But right now as it stands today. Petrino is the better coach and Chizik is the better recruiter. Give it another 5 years and Chizik will be the better coach and recruiter. The reality is players make coaches look good. I would rather have the recruiter.

    Petrino has won 10 or more twice since he has been at Arky. He has had Ryan Mallett and Tyler Wilson as his QBs for all but 1 season at Arky. Both 1st round talents. The only year he didn't have either of them he went 5-7.

Petrino had more guys drafted from Louisville than Chiz had from Iowa st. Those 2 programs are very comparble. Explain that?

    He didn't recruit Casey... he had no choice. If the NCAA had granted Mallet to play instead of sitting Casey never sees the field....

    Overall I say Bobby P., and yes Gene has a ring but if you take into consideration Gene time at ISU it makes his record look bad....

    Not that guy but I agree they are. However the rift isn't huge and don't forget, it's a lot harder to recruit from Arkansas than from Auburn.

    Petrino would recruit better at Auburn than Chizik does now IMO.

    I understand why you say that but Bobby Petrino in 4 years at Arkansas has more NFL guys on his roster than Chizik has at Auburn. You can show me recruiting rankings until youre blue in the face but until I see a Chizik Sign a Knile Davis and back him up with a Ronnie Wingo,Im going to dispute what youre saying.

    Pretty sure Chiz's Auburn recruits aren't even draft eligible yet.

    Carrol: Leinart/Bush etc
    Chiz:Newton/Fairley
    Bowden: C. Ward/Weinke/Warrick
    Saban:Julio/Ingram/Trent/Countless 1st round defensive talent
    Mack Brown: VYoung
    Spurrier: Fred Taylor/Danny W

    You get the point. Every coach on this list had players, elite players at that.

    Petrino wont have the same type players at Ark, as Gene at Auburn.

    So its Chiz by default. Saban didnt win a 'ship at MSU, Mack didnt win until VYoung came.Recruiting, especially in todays landscape, is the #1 priority outside of assistant coaches hirings.
