Notre Dame

  • I got lit up on Twitter for saying the Irish were a title contender afte they beat Michigan in September. There was logic behind that. Notre Dame has an outstanding defensive front, one of the best in college football.

People ask all the time what separates the SEC from the other leagues and it is the size/athleticism combo from the defensive fronts. Ask any defensive coordinator and they will tell you that if you can get pressure with four, your job is a whole lot easier. One even told me once that that is the only way to stop a tempo offense- with great DL play.

I think Notre Dame has the defensive line to play with Alabama on Jan. 7.

  • Ha ,I remember that. I think everyone took notice once they beat Oklahoma and their front is very good. Should be a good game I can hardly wait.

True. You need two things to be ultra successful in the SEC running tempo. 1- A great offensive line 2- A legitimate big play run threat at quarterback.

Aggies had both this year. So did Auburn in 2010.

Agree 100% and have stated such multiple times on BOL. Quite possible that 2 of the ND front 3 will go in the Top 10 in the 2014 draft as I didn't realize that Stephon Tuitt and Louis Nix were as good as they are.

I think AJ to Cooper will be the difference in the game as I'm not sold that the ND secondary can contain Cooper unless they have safety help over the top wherever he lines up.

Jabrill Peppers...More I watch, the more I'm convinced he is the best player in the 2014 class. Barring injury, he will do special things.

That's why it all comes down to our front 7 against your run game. Against SC there was always a safety over the top of Lee. If we are able to have a safety over the top of Cooper, who else does Bama have in the receiving game? I haven't seen anyone that worries me.

Bama's other receivers are capable, but Cooper is the big-play threat. I am sure Notre Dame will have a good gameplan.

People think I'm crazy when I say this but I think Cooper is already a better WR [exception being blocking] than Julio was at Bama and he [Cooper] and Marqise Lee are very similar/comparable in terms of skillset & measureables. The difference is that Lee is the 1st option in pass oriented offense while Bama is a run 1st team

Heard/read that Cooper ran 4.38 at a Bama Camp in 2011 and he does display great burst, agility, and ball skills. Best WR I've ever seen play at Bama.....he's made 5-6 catches this year that I didn't think was possible when the throw was made.

Folks that question Cooper's ability should which his film/highlights from this season.

I think Coop's been more consistent with his hands than Julio at this point in their careers, but it's awfully hard to say he's better overall. I think people forget ... that for almost his entire career ... I never saw one person tackle Julio by himself who wasn't named Patrick Peterson. They're different. Coop much quicker off the ball, but can be pressed by bigger corners ... Julio not near the route-runner that Coop is at this point ... and to me, the tipping scale - Julio was a devastating blocker in college and still is in the NFL. Watching him erase Texas corners in Pasadena was real, real fun.

They're just different, but probably equally great in their own right. Julio may have more of a flair for the spectacular catch and has ups that maybe only a handful of guys in the league have. But again, Coop's probably more consistent on the routine stuff.

Great discussion - can't go wrong with either guy. Question to consider - and of course it's pure speculation, but isn't that fun? Can you see an NFL team mortgaging their draft future on Amari Cooper like ATL did with Julio? Obviously it would have to be a team with need ... but ... I certainly can.

The #1 job of a WR is to run routes and catch footballs, and freshman Cooper simply does these better then Julio did in college.

Depends on your offensive philosophy. Julio just being on the field for us made defenses have to adjust/roll coverages, remove a LB from the box or a safety from the box. LSU was the only team willing to lock him up with Peterson, and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.

In a run-first offense like Bama's, what made Julio dangerous in ways that Coop really isn't was two things: 1) his ability to block corners on the perimeter with the effectiveness of a TE or HB. And 2) Julio could take a 5 yard hitch, shove our corner in the dirt and go for 20-plus - something Coop can't really do.

But, again ... Coop explodes into routes ... by that I mean he accelerates INTO his breaks, and snaps them off quicker and faster than Julio did. The other thing that Coop benefits from is a more balanced offensive attack with a quarterback who hasn't always been reigned in the way JP Wilson was and G-Mac in his first year.

    Good discussion!

  • We all know what Alabama offers on offense and defense. We also know what ND offers on defense. What is going to be the big question is how much better will Golson get for the ND offense. First 6 weeks of the season, he clearly had talent but had lots to learn. The next 6 weeks, he grew tremendously as a QB and the leader of the offense. Now Brian Kelly has 6 more weeks to get him developed into the QB that can lead his team to a win in the BCS Championship Game. Everett Golson is going to be a major factor in this game.

Agree with Golson being a major factor one way or the other. But, I wouldn't call it "6 weeks." Bama just started back to practice today. I'd imagine ND is around the same time. That leaves, what ... just shy of 3 weeks with some time likely off for Christmas. Yes, still plenty of time ... but I think sometimes people get carried away with "6 weeks" or "almost two months" to get ready.

The other X factor in this is Kelly vs. Saban. Knowing how to properly prepare - and guard against - your team's mindset and ability to handle intense hype and scrutiny. Huge factor in all this.

    cheers

It's not like our run game has diminished without Julio around to block for it though. We can certainly agree in a previous era of football Julio would have been the greatest split end in the game.

As for the impact on defenses, but next year (if not next month), I see Cooper having the same impact that Julio did. Except to be honest I'd be more worried about stacking the box against Cooper then I would be Julio, as slants that go for 20 don't hurt as bad as having your corner burnt for long touchdowns. That in particular is special about Cooper, for somebody so young to be able to adjust on deep routes and consistently pull them in is amazing to me. I can't say for certain QB play wasn't a factor in this, but Julio rarely caught the deep passes.

Obviously the guy wasn't chopped liver by any means and like I said gets better every week in the NFL, but as much as I loved watching Julio maul defenders and turn short passes and screens into big plays, I think I'm going to enjoy two more years of Amari catching long passes with consistency more.

Can't argue any of that much ... let's be honest ... it's going to be fun to watch ...

With ND not having a CCG, they had a week extra of studying film. I'm sure that 15 actual practices is still a good # for Golson. It's the film room. Not just watching with the other QBS, but also watching with his offensive line. He has plenty in the film room he can learn. It's not all physical.

No doubt, D-Mo. Plenty of time for everyone. But, you can achieve paralysis by analysis. So you have to be careful about overloading. #1 thing that coaches have to guard against in moments like this is over-coaching, or out-coaching yourself. Don't think either staff will do that though.

I think Cooper's a stud and don't know why you are trying to convince me. It's the other receiving options I doubt. We were able to handle Lee for the most part. Bama's rushing attack is 10x better, obviously. Then again USC's #2 receiver is probably 10x better than your second receiver. I'm really concerned about stopping your screen game too.

It was more so to acknowledge my opinion of Cooper's talents to tBB in general than trying to convince you. My fault in terms of context of the reply as I can see your perspective.
