Notre Dame to join the BIG-10

If it wasnt for Michigan not allowing us into the conference back in the 40's then our great rivalry probably doesnt take place. Not being a homer but I beleive our rivalry is the biggest in all of college football. But that's just me.

I agree Big John. I have only been to one but it was a great time. The night before the bars were packed with fans from both schools having a great time. The only negative was the final score!

I meant Meyer in stature only.

Big difference. Stanford sits in a recruiting hotbed with a struggling Cal and UCLA.

With those academic requirements, I don't care where they sit, they have the smallest recruiting pool in the country to draw from. Vanderbilt is in the south, and they lose the cream of the crop in academics and football talent to the west coast.

Plus, they have to compete with USC that has a grander tradition in CFB than they do, and while Stanford has elite academics, USC is no slouch in that category either.

Cal may not win, but look at the players they put into the league...evidently, enough kids want to play football for the flagship school of the public university system. UCLA are just a joke with no excuse for being so shitty.

Since 1925. Our rivalry is the most unique in CFB, without question. We may choke on this to say it, but there has always been respect mixed in with the hate, lol.

I'm proud of the fact that USC stood by Notre Dame in the 40s when everyone surrounding them was against them..we refused to end the series, even though we were losing to the Irish.

    Well said.

A lot of ND haters like to poke fun of the fact that ND plays Navy every year. Navy helped ND tremendously in a time when ND was struggling financially to survive so I do not see ND ever ending that rivalry.

Or with SC. Those are 2 good reason's not to join a conference. Keep our traditional rivals. If we were to join a conference both game's would be in jeopardy.

Trojans know and understand it. Notre Dame is loyal to those they call rivals...and the Domers pick them well!

Michigan began the crusade against Notre Dame when the Irish began beating them soundly...and didn't play the Irish for 40 years. All these interesting little facts put winning percentages of some of these various programs into perspective...playing the system to pad your winning stats. All that losing to the most dominant football program of it's time, didn't help us one bit. biggrin

ND will never drop SC & vice versa. Rockne would roll over in his grave.

I agree, but I would bet USC and Navy would be the top 2 teams they would try to keep on the schedule.

This is where power comes in....USC did not back down to the PAC to change anything about this rivalry, an exception made for it's traditional time slot (the "Notre Dame exception") the only OOC game that can be played during the conference season. Helps to have godless Stanford - one of the two California schools that is against admitting a religious school into the conference, also wishing to continue their renewed series with the Irish.

The Domers have a strong bargaining power in any conference they chose.

No way. While i'll admit the product on the field has been lacking for some time ND is too much of a cash cow & that count's most of all. If ND return's to ND of old they can pretty much do what they want. They put asses in the seat's & eye's on the TV & that can never be invaluable.

Explain how we will be recognized as a Houston or Boise State?

Read a little further up in the thread another poster said ND would fall into an non qualifying AQ. I said no way. Wont happen due to the fact ND bring's too much money to the table to be left out.

I love Notre Dame/Navy and actually would be for them playing Army as well. I like the tradition of the game even if it isn't a great matchup every year.

Yes that is a major one but what about our fanbase? Schedule strength? Academics? Facilities? Top 10 recruiting classes every cycle? People don't think things through before they post on here sometimes.

Strong bargaining power for sure. I just hope they don't try to make that bargaining power something that they and other teams in a possible conference regret.

I want Notre Dame to do what they think is best for them. I would love to see them good again, but don't know if they want to do the things that are best for the football program or what's best for their image as a University. Those priorities have to be decided first. Personally, if a conference is the way the decide to go, I think it needs to be the B1G as the ACC or even worse, the Big East would do more to marginalize the brand than help it.

Notre Dame and the B1G certainly don't need each other, but they would both be good for each other, if that makes sense at all.

All that too. But I just got right to the point. The dude basically said ND would be shut out of the BCS & MNC game's due to the fact that they were not in a conference. I called BS because ND is too big of a draw to be shut out. ND= Rating's & Money.

Recruiting hasn't been the problem. Losing players because of poor coaching hires and just plain poor coaching is what has currently hurt the most.

Someone said if the Irish don't join a conf. soon we will be with the likes of Boise State and Houston what a joke. And there is alot more to it than that. It has been the perfect storm the last 20 years.

Start off with running Holtz outta town. Then Hurricane Davie followed by Hurricane Ty. Lack of a training table or keeping up in the S.C department. I could go on.

Provost Dr. Tom Burish stated in the release that “While Notre Dame would have preferred to maintain its independence, the financial realities of the world of college football made the decision a necessity.” He also said that “The longstanding tradition of the schools in the Big 10 conference best fit that of the Irish program”, according to reports.

A press conference has been scheduled for April 30th, at which time the formal official announcement will apparently be made.

They had their chance. I'm not so sure the door is open. Not to mention I have my questions as to the authenticity of the info. I hope this is not true. Let em play in the Big East !
