Notre Dame to join the BIG-10

  • Guys, guys...you're really getting defensive...BetterOff is attempting an intelligent discussion, obviously he is well informed, and he has been extremely complimentary. We all have our own issues we have to face and work with. I don't think that there has been one disrespectful post on this thread.

You guys are better than that, nothing to get defensive about other than you're just damn sick of your program not being up to Irish standards. The bar is set very high for you.

You forget how much of a afterthought Bama almost became before Saban came to town.

    No I haven't.

I'm the one saying Notre Dame needs to get a coach thatcan handle the situation and get their priorities set if they want to win. Can't keep up with limitations like there are now. Or you can keep being the biggest .500 draw in football.

I never was, but marginalizing what Boise St has accomplished is so off point.

Nobody understands. It's almost a curse being an Irish fan. So much success the first 70 years of our program doomes us. I think people got sick of seeing ND win. It's almost as if God himself is punishing us now for being so successful.

No I didn't. Someone ND was becomming Houston or Boise St.

I said they were an idiot, but that being compared to Boise St's program isn't bad so they were a bigger idiot than they intended to be actually.

SC had a rough go in the 80s and 90s though before PC got there.

The late 90s and first 8 years for this century weren't kind to us.

In both cases it started with the administration. People at Bama had to realize Bama wasn't a selling point anymore. Facilities and coaching wins. Notre Dame has another issue which is its enrollment standards that 98% of the schools don't have to deal with.

We put in the money and made the stadium, facilities, and everything else, the best there is. Then we went and got the coach.

Notre Dame can do the same and money shouldn't be an issue. If they have to spend $8 million dollars to get their guy, then fine.

Michigan began the crusade against Notre Dame when the Irish began beating them soundly...and didn't play the Irish for 40 years. All these interesting little facts put winning percentages of some of these various programs into perspective...playing the system to pad your winning stats. All that losing to the most dominant football program of it's time, didn't help us one bit. biggrin

    That is extremely laughable.

Why would we drop Notre Dame just for beating us? Ohio State beat us a lot more during that time, but did we drop them?

Chicago was just as good as us during our early years, and we lost to them multiple times, did we drop them as well?

We stopped playing them after the 1909 year because it was after Chicago mounted an attack over Michigan and we left the Big Ten and we were struggling financially trying to schedule games. It wasn't until 1917 that we entered back into the Big Ten, in which the rules that Chicago put into place (such as restrictive scheduling and other rules created to subdue Michigan) were still into effect. It wasn't until much later that we scheduled them again for a few games, after which we didn't schedule them for a while (we were 9-2 against ND at that time, we sure as heck was not afraid of them).

The whole "crusade" thing that people say Michigan had for ND is a load of crap, and just wild (and incorrect) speculation. If not for Michigan, there would never be a ND.

Also, who are these programs that played the game to "pad" their system?

  • The Big Ten threw Michigan out back in the day because they were biggest pain in the ass to deal with. It set them straight for a 100 years but it exists to this day.

1940s, ask any Domer alum/booster, he'll tell you...it's also in all the mountains of books on the history of college football.

This is an article from NDNation, regardless of the source, there are good reference books that tells the whole pathetic story. It is what it is.

As far as what has changed in my eyes is that kids you are recruiting today don't see the same luster that Notre Dame once had. You can't expect to say we're Notre Dame and expect to get the players without working your asses off just like everyone else. Trust me, Bama fans had to come to grips with this as well.

If they don't see the same luster then why do we have a top 10 class every cycle?
How did Alabama work there asses off to get where their at?

It most certainly is. Notre Dame history is very closely connected to ours, and all those facts are stated in almost every book I own on the history of our two programs. Plus, it is also mentioned in several books I own on the BIG-10 and the Michigan vs Ohio State rivalry.

By upgrading our facilities to one of the best in the country and paying a coach as much as it took to get the job done. It's also not a good thing when you have top 10 classes every year and still suck.

You could be very wrong...sometimes even people in the "business of college football" make very big mistakes....such as...

    Agent Jimmy Sexton..

Sexton did poke fun at himself with an old story about his other big-name client in this state.

During Saban's tenure at Michigan State, he called Sexton with some news. USC Athletic Director Mike Garrett had called Saban to say that he wanted him to coach the Trojans.

This was before USC hired Paul Hackett, the guy it fired after three years to get it right with Pete Carroll.

The way Sexton told it, Saban asked his advice.

"I said, `Man, you don't want to go to Southern Cal. Nobody wants to send their kids to school in south central LA anymore. I don't see them being a power anymore.'"

Saban likes to remind Sexton of his USC analysis "to this day," Sexton said.

"Every time they're No. 1 or No. 2 or No. 3 in the country, he looks at me and says, `Jimmy, you still think Southern Cal can't win anymore?'

"Sometimes, you give bad advice," Sexton said. "You're not always right. Trust me."

Don't ever overlook the ability of a historic program to return to relevance.
