Notre Dame to join the BIG-10

  • usctrojan1 said...

Provost Dr. Tom Burish stated in the release that “While Notre Dame would have preferred to maintain its independence, the financial realities of the world of college football made the decision a necessity.” He also said that “The longstanding tradition of the schools in the Big 10 conference best fit that of the Irish program”, according to reports.

A press conference has been scheduled for April 30th, at which time the formal official announcement will apparently be made.

What relevant rivalries does ND have in the ACC?

Rivalry with Michigan kills anything they have with an ACC team, and MSU is a good annual game also.

Yes it has more Big rivalries in Big 10... but Pitt, Georgia Tech, BC are all rivals of ND...maybe not near as big time but ND has too many rivals as it is...its impossible to keep them all going and far as im concerned as long as they keep playing SC then they not losing much... rivalry between navy is a joke...But if playing its rivals is its main goal then it will go to the Big 10...All I was saying was it does have rivals in the ACC not making a point of ACC rivals > Big 10

That is really the only reason they would do it. At this point I do not care what ND does. If they want to shoot themselves in the foot and not act in their own best interests then that is fine with me.

I also believe the ACC could be the best conference for ND for a number of reasons

    As do I.

The next few years will be interesting to watch. The P12 is launching its own network and rumors are that the SEC and ACC are planning to do the same. Unless ND can coax a lot more money out of someone for TV rights as an independent, the $ gap is going to make it harder and harder for them to remain competitive (and not just in football).

There was a lot of talk last year that ND was working on launching it's own network. Haven't heard much about it of late.

Be careful what you wish for IMO. Losing NBC deal will hurt ND's national recruiting.

That's why ACC is more appealing than B10.

About what, joining the ACC? We've had this question posed on B&G many times. Most favor joining the ACC.

I thought ND was talking about a digital network only. It's really hard to start a 24/7 cable TV network. The programming costs and other overhead are extremely high. UT is finding that out the hard way. It's much easier for a conference to do it because the primary subscriber base is larger and there is more cheap content in the form of marketable live games from 12 different schools. Even on BTN, the replay content gets old fast. I can't imagine what it would be like if BTN was limited to only one school instead of twelve.

Did 90,000 people show up to any of the Big Ten spring games?

PSU had 65k even though the weather report said thunderstorms all weekend, stopping most people from making the 3+ hour drives to State College.

I think the problem is you are letting emotions get in the way of objective analysis. No way is joining the ACC a better financial decision. And it's really hard to see how an 9-game conference schedule of ACC football teams is more appealing to ND fans than an 8-game schedule of B10 teams. ND fans' desire to join the ACC over the B10 seems almost entirely driven by historical hatred of the B10.

I highly doubt spring game attendance will be a criteria ND uses when picking a conference to join.

Well...ah, hate to tell you, but do you blame them? There was some really ugly stuff the BIG was trying to pull off...the religious hatred and trying to get them banned from CFB - led by Michigan? The BIG even tried to get USC to stop the rivalry.

All that hate is why the Irish are independents...you created the monster. lol

Hey, quick question. Our AD has mentioned twice recently about an upcoming series with a P12 team. He is being very tight lipped, but it sounds like a 2014/2015 deal and we've narrowed it down to Cal, Oregon, Wazzu, Stanford, Utah and USC based on schedule availability. We've played Oregon and Utah twice in the regular season recently, so we're guessing it's not them. Have you heard anything about a possible series with us?

P.S. We will be incredibly disappointed if it turns out to be Washington State.

No, I haven't, our Athletic Department doesn't usually announce opponents till everything is signed and sealed.

Good lord, that would be a great series! I would love to attend a game at the Big House...

Yeah. I've never been to the Coliseum. A football game in the Coliseum plus some time in the surf and sun? Heaven!

If it happens, you'll have to stop by our tailgate and eat....of course, you'll see our resident Buckeye wearing his nut necklace, sitting in a tOSU chair.

Why we haven't stripped him naked and burned his chair, is beyond me. biggrin
