  • How would you rate Jim tressel as a coach(obviously try and disregard the Pryor ordeal) but as a coach, we're y'all happy with the guy? Had none of those things happened would he still be at OSU and would you be happy with him there? Did he have a good record against your rivals? Do you think he deserves a shot to be a coach somewhere else and do you think he would have success? Just wondering what you guys think since he was a big part of your program for a while.

  • Gonna be hard for any coach to top him at tOSU. Only thing you could do would be win multiple national titles. E brought our first one in 40 years, 9-1 against UM, multiple BCS wins. Damn good coach.

  • Yeah I thought we should have stood by him. Hell of a coach and a better person. Obviously he made a mistake, but I wish we hadn't thrown out a great man for one eff up.

Yeah I loved the clip of Matt Millen saying he was talking up Tress to every NFL team he could, trying to get him outta there any way he could

One of the happiest days of my life was the day Tressel was forced to resign. Great recruiter, great game planner, great game manager ... and always that stupid looking Vest.

  • Thanks y'all, I've been in an argument with another poster on my home board about how we should go for him if chiz does indeed fall through. He said that he was a cheater and did not do well in the big ten. I know it's mainly wishful thinking but it would be a hell of a hire. I agree, the guy can coach and he always seemed so well reserved and classy. Plus his sweater vest and tie was thing was awesome, dude has style.

NCAA gave him a 5-year show cause penalty.

Damn. That really sucks. But like I said mainly just wishful thinking anyhow.

Thats actually not as deadly as it sounds. You basically are just agreeing to go on probation during that period. Auburn can get a legit coach without subjecting themselves to that, but there are many teams that I think he'd do wonders for.

It's theoretically possible, but I'm not aware of any coach ever hired by an NCAA member school while under a show cause order. Here is a wiki page on it. It sounds like very few ever return to coaching at the NCAA level even after the show cause has expired.

  • Yeah I know it hasn't happened, but I can't remember a coach of the caliber of Tress getting a show cause either. Take a second tier program that has a decent recruitng base like Tex A&M, GT, Miss St, etc. Imagine what good Tress could do for a program like that.

I shudder to think at how much Tress could transform TAMU for the better, especially with all the talent there is down in Texas.

No sense arguing over how good he was. He owned the B10. Of course, let's face it, he was cheating the entire time. But he racked up a ton of Ws for you guys and was a major pain in our ass from the moment he arrived to the moment he was caught. And I'm extremely happy he's gone. How's that?

  • Tress will go down as a legend in the Ohio State community. 10-15 years from now people will forget/forgive Tress for his fault. He's a terrific coach and even better man. Right up there with the great, late Woody Hayes. Might have even surpassed him had he still been here. If he ever decides to come back somewhere, he'll make that program proud. You'll just have to deal with his conservative nature, esp. on offense. Ugh! But he won so many damn games with it that it's really hard to fault him.

IMHO, I don't think Urban will top the success level of Tress. Urbs might win a championship or 2 more, but beating your hated rival 9/10 times is almost going to be impossible to top. He owned the B1G (I know, not saying much, but still), owned tTUN, won multiple conference/outright championships, a national championship, 3 overall appearances in the big dance, 5 bowl wins, Heisman Trophy winner, all-Americans, great recruiter, on and on.

He's right behind Woody in my all-time favorite Buckeye coaches.

I'll take probation for a coach that will explode the program out of it like I think.he could.

  • Tress was an amazingly successful coach.

I don't have the stats in front of me, but he played 3 Natty's, a ton of BCS games, dominated Hot Dog Water and the rest of the Big Ten, hell of a recruiter etc.

He frustrated many of us with his conservative play calling and running Dave every other play. Many also thought he was into seniority and old relationships too much. Too loyal.

Looking back at the those 3 things as the worst on field issues he had and we were blessed.

    Outstanding

Do me a favor. Next time you see your friend, just slap him across the face. I understand many average fans don't know much outside of their own teams. However, a college football fan should not say Tressel "did not do well in the big ten." There are many things fans can say about Tressel and his national perception. However, his B1G dominance should be known by everyone that watches college football.
