OT: ACL surgery recovery

  • Let me say its been two days since surgery and this sh@# sucks. Been in a bed for two days straight and headed to physical therapy today. Any advice for me? How do college athletes deal with this? Ha. I'm 25 and worst thing ever.

    1st question....Are you Derrick Rose?

    2nd question....Can i get an autograph?

As for advice, take a sh!tload of painkillers to the point where you are on the brink of addiction. Then, switch to drinking a sh!tload of alcohol to the point where you are on the brink of addiction. Both are good pain killers, and by the time you stop drinking, your knee should be fine, and you have no addictions to deal with.

  • It sucks. I've done it twice to the same knee (both before the age of 20). Do exactly what the therapist says. If you don't it won't heal properly trust me

Just got back from therapy. I have a bunch of exercises to do at home. Then I have to go see him for 3 x a week. Gonna be a painful month.

  • Had mine done last summer and like the other guy said, listen to your therapist. It sucks to do all the therapy but it's worth it I the end

Not going to lie therapy sucks man. It's no fun. It hurts like a bitch. I remember I had to peddle a bike 3 days after surgery. They also brought me in the day after surgery and straightened it completely. I was 16 the first time and thought it hurt to much to deal with it so I just did a half ass job. Now I walk with a Slightly visible limp because I can't straighten it all the way and have 2 slipped discs in my back because of that. Trust me man, don't make the same mistakes I did.

  • Watched my wife go through it... did not look fun at all.

  • I just did some home exercises. Im going to try an follow the plan to the T. I'm just ready to sleep without having my leg sitting on top of pillows.

  • I had a partial tear 24 years ago and it still bothers me. My daughter had the full cadaver replacement of the ACL 10 years ago and she's doing fine but there is occasional pain. She was an athlete and rehabbed like she should. I was a dad and working and didn't have time to rehab like I should and I've paid for it.

I had the cadaver replacement when about 8 years ago. My physical therapist was tough, and I'm glad she was because she stressed the horror stories of improperly rehabbing. I'm glad I did because I haven't had too many issues with it, recovery was much longer but well worth it. Really only noticed any resulting pain on long car rides or falling asleep with my legs propped up on a table.

Yea my therapist said I would hate him in a few days. I just wanna take it slow and do everything right. It's crazy how u see college football players come back from this injury with little to no problem. I guess they have top notch trainers around them 24/7 as opposed to the average person.

  • I'm 8 months out from mine (which I tore over 3 years ago). It sucks not being able to move your leg, but you'll be fine in a couple weeks. As far as recommendations go: don't overdo it and do what you're told. If you do that, you're set.

  • Tore both my ACLs in high school but thankfully made a full recovery from both. Make sure to do the at-home exercises because they really do help and the PT can tell when you aren't doing them.

  • 6 years ago I had a complete tear on my ACL and torn meniscus in my left knee. They did a graft (sp) of my patella tendon. The PT sucked bad and hurt like a bitch but well worth it. I've got friends who didn't do their PT like they was suppose to and their knee isn't close to the same.

  • How many months of rehab did you guys do? I mean actually going to the physical therapist.

From August 4 to the end of October, so 3 or so months. Went 3-4 times per week initially to help regain movement, and then scaled it back later on when I began exercises. I had full motion at about a month, was walking around in a brace in about 3 weeks. The worst part was easily the first week. I had the femoral block and it took 72 hours for me to regain feeling in my right leg. Just a weird feeling and not something I'd want to experience again.

  • I tore mine and did all the rehab and my knee turned out ok. Like others said only time I notice it is when i sit my legs up on a table for a while or a long car ride. I had a friend in high school who decided not to do physical therapy but tried to do it on his own and now he b*tches about how his knee hurts all the time. So just make sure to take the exercises seriously they will pay off.

  • Had shoulder surgery a couple years ago and it was the most miserable summer of my life (minus the fact I timed it with the World Cup). Learning to sleep on my back sucked and I never could sleep for more than an hour or two at a time. I know knees and shoulders are different, but I can't reinforce the importance of PT enough.

  • Thanks for all the feedback. I'm just ready to get the first week over. Day 3 and I'm miserable. I'm putting in a lot of overtime on TBB. Ha.

I was in the same boat recovering from micro-fracture surgery 2 and a half years ago---work, and kids = not enough therapy/rehab

Thanks. The worst still isn't over. Knee is still swollen and can't hardly sleep. Wish I could fast forward 1 month from now. Ha
