OT - Any mechanics on the board??

I have a 2001 Chevy with a 3.4L v6. Just out it in the shop yesterday. Chuck told me today that the timing chain broke. Some valves are open and the exhaust is blowing back through the air filter. He said I could either get the valve and head job done or just replace with another engine. Either way I am screwed. Looking at about 1400.00 either way.
Does that sound right?? Engine is interference so there could be damage to the stems.

1400 for a new engine is cheap as hell. I'd do that.

Used for sure. It has about 85000 miles on it but warranted for a year. Think I am going to have to go with the replacement instead of rebuilding the one I have. Would hate to rebuild the top just to have the bottom go bad.
Will stick with Ford next time.

The Chevy is my wife's. I drive a Ford Ranger. Bought it new in 1995 and it is still going strong. A couple of months ago, the oil pump went out causing my engine to freeze then broke my timing belt. Thought it was a gonner. They replaces the pump, broke the cam free, put anew belt on it and it started right up. Killer little truck.
