OT: Anyone here live in Vegas?

  • We've been several times, but just stay on the strip. The wife and I are considering a dramatic change in scenery, and she loves Vegas (I've tried to explain that no one will pay you for people watching on the strip or going to the O Show). She has a phobia of tornadoes, and we live in Tuscaloosa (tornado alley).

I guess I want to know:

    1) What's the job market like for medical professionals (her) and any kind of business (I have a business degree from Bama)...probably sales.

    2) Cost of living? It looked kinda like the real estate market would be easy to get a decent crib.

    3) What are the cons associated w/ living in Vegas? (besides needing a lot of carmex for your lips)

  • Also, I'll be away from the comp for an hr or two, but would appreciate any input from people that live there.

Tough job market, except maybe the medical field. There are opportunities, but the unemployment rate is over 11%. Housing market is real good if you can find a house or have cash. Been here for 18 years and love it. Lots of opportunities, but you have to work to find them. We do get our share of wind and the occasional heavy thunderstorms. Dry heat in summer and dry cold in winter for most part.

  • I personally hated living in Vegas in terms of scenery. I simply got tired of not seeing grass. I lived in Henderson, actually in Vegas, and north of Vegas (not the bad part). It's good if you're one who likes to gamble but other than that nothing great about it IMO. Except everything's always open.

We could convene at a watering hole and get in shouting matches about SEC vs. B1G and get tossed from the establishment.

Thanks for the input. I'm less worried about the wife, since she has experience and education as an XRay tech, and primary nurse for both Orthopaedic and ENT practices, including taking call for docs who want to drink. I've owned a couple small businesses while also working in high end sales for about 12 years, along w/ my business degree, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't make me unique in a tough job market.
