OT: Bryce Harper

  • Don't like harpers attitude, think the nl is harder to put up numbers in as well. Sbs are cool when you are younger but as time goes on the injury risk isnt worth the loss of power, rbi etc. i look to andrew cutch to be a further along example of how to treat a star. Im an idiot but for some reason i think harper busts this year.

Cutch is my boy. He's as good a dude as there is in MLB.

Harper is a jackass... Super arrogant. (kind of like it though)

I don't know how anybody couldn't appreciate his attitude, and he isn't a jackass imo

That is vastly overblown iyam, he is just a kid who knows how good he is

But his reputation off the field is pretty good around here, he is doing and saying all the right things so far and hasn't been in any real kind of trouble

And considering DC's reputation for night life the temptation is there for sure

Lol. I could name like a billion circumstances.

I liked during the playoffs when asked if he felt anxious at the plate:

"Do I look anxious to you"

    "Yes, you kind of do"

"You should be a hitting coach"

    lol

  • Bryce is a smart ass but he is actually pretty funny and within an acceptable range. I'd prefer Bryce Harper's smart ass come backs and wry grin jokes over AROD's smugness any day of the week. Didnt realize there was such a big anti-Harper contingent.

  • Trout & Harper are gonna look good in the same outfield in the same uni as Yankees in a few years.

  • Bryce's swing is going to eff him in the future. No way he can keep that up for long.

  • Have had a few friends play with him in the minors. My buddies are far from flashy or douchey and they loved him.

    Why is that?

Well, the long windup he has in his swing basically requires that you need to be young and quick. The older he gets the harder it will be for him to continue it. FWIW, he has already had to shortened his swing a bit (which is not easy to do). Secondly, that swing is very hard on the body and will likely cause him nagging injury issues down the road. Simply put, it's a terrible swing.

What swing doesn't require that you be young and quick? No offense, but you could literally say that about every major league guy. Everything before getting from load to extension in hitting is gloss, and he goes from A to B like everyone else. There are only two guys that I recall pitchers struggling to beat in often: Bonds and Sheffield.

As far as the kinesthetics of it, so much is inconclusive and based on personal malleability that its tough to say. Even things like the inverted W and GHERD are inconclusive for pitchers.

    +1

and yeah he is hated, even around DC

People just hate on him and imo most of it is unjust and pretty ridiculous

Word, and you hear this from those close to him almost 100% of the time

The hate comes from a misunderstanding based off poor media portrayal

He is just a kid and that seems lost in the translation among other things

  • I thought you weren't allowed to quote him? I'm a little scared for bryce. If he does't tone it down hes gonna be getting buzzed by pitchers all day. Who knows what getting plunked a few times on purpose coukd do to a young mans psyche

If it's not an issue, then why did Harper shorten it up? I think it's a bit ignorant to claim that it's not an issue.

Look at how far he cocks it before it lets it go. It's terrible.

I can see it too but people that hate on him on mostly asswipes from what I have seen

The kid is very cool imo and if he keeps his nose clean off the field america will begin to embrace him as a superstar

Its rare when I like an athlete as much as I like Harper, the more I learn the more I like

Guys like him are why pro sports are fun to watch, unique personality combined with unique talent

I misread that for a moment and thought it was troll of the year. I'd say that's obvious though. Miggy's fat, 30+ year old self needs to train harder or he'll fall off quick IMO.

I also asked about him winning MVP and you compared him to two AL guys. Not relevant really.

Fall off quick? Based on what? Baseball is not football, you don't have to be in tip top shape to be great. With the way Miggy swings the bat and his ability to make contact, the only thing that will falter is his power, but that is completely normal.

Miggy lost around 25 pounds last year and has been working out the same way this offseason, so I highly, highly doubt he drops off.

You ever see Bond's hitch? This kid is what 20? He'd damn well better make adjustments, but his swing has no large flaws.

Hitting is all about balance, and even in that gif he isn't fooled and out front, doesn't fly open, he just misses. The kid has incredible balance, and still doesn't get beat in with his hitch. Like I said load to extension quick as lightning like all great hitters.

How would you attack that swing if its so terrible? Because after years of getting paid to figure that out, I can't find it. Maybe that's why I'm out of a job shrug

This x me. I hate ARod and his smugness, I take it that is has nothing to say so he doesn't. And every time he opens his mouth he puts his foot right in it. He's the anti Jeter.

I think BH gets up in the 32-35 range for HR this year and 282-290 ave

  • Also, if you watch this http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt4aNRFgKlI

you can see that his hitch looks exaggerated on offspeed because he keeps his hands back so well and stays over his back leg.

That is very advanced for a hitter his age, and something that our pitching staff used against Trout when he was in Cedar Rapids (which he has since fixed). Not just to get outs but to keep the ball in the yard and take some pop away when in a jam.

If they could consistently beat him in they would, and just flash offspeed to keep him honest but they don't do that. Any time they try to get in on him he is lightning quick to the ball.

Make some valid points. There is maybe a few on this board that have stood in the box facing a 95+ fastball followed up with an off speed pitch of some kind and know how difficult it is. Harper does have some additional movement prior to starting but the part that matters is getting the head through the zone short and quick and finish through the ball. Most don't realize how hitters adjust there game as they get stronger and more mature. Him and trout very advanced for such a young age. Takes most guys many more years to dial it in. Can look at most great hitters and see adjustments as there years go bye as there swings many times become more efficient and or shorter to the ball

  • I saw 92-94 followed up by off speed...holy mother of god! I can't imagine ever getting used to it. The diff in 92 to 94 seemed like a hell of a lot more that it does from 78-80.

I too love the way Harper keeps his hands cocked, that's a reason fastballs got by him more than they should. I'd rather my young guy work on fundamentals of overall hitting rather than sit fastball and have to learn later
