OT: Carnival Cruise Advice?

  • Tomorrow I'm flying to Tampa to start a five-day cruise on Saturday. We're stopping in Cozumel and Grand Cayman. I've never really been on a cruise, nor have I ever been to the two ports.

Anyone have any advice for the cruise and our two ports? I'll be with a pretty substantially sized group, so I'm sure there will be plenty to do one way or another.

Just two ports? I loved that cruise...I believe we also stopped in Jamaica, Ocho Rios. Carnival was fun, lots to do and I liked the youth-influenced atmosphere (even though I'm old, I like being around the kids - lot more fun to watch). I took a tour in each port, they offer whatever you want...cruises are great for the tours, so you can determine later if you wish to visit an island on your own, and where to stay to enjoy more time.

    Have fun!

  • Eat at the sit down dinners- all food on the ship is free but that is far and away the best. The room service is pretty terrible, and expect to fight through mass numbers of people at lunch when you go to the cafeterias.

Buy lots of duty free liquor aboard the ship- most ports don't care if you declare it all or not and don't care much about the 2 bottle per person limit. Good way to stock your bar for the upcoming year for cheap.

Be prepared to pay a lot to drink aboard the ship- you can't get alcohol anywhere else and they know it.

One of the snorkeling excursions in...pretty sure it was Cozumel...comes with as much free Corona as you can drink. I was too hung over to partake at the time, but you should check it out.

If there's a comedian on board, rest assured he sucks and avoid the show.

Your only respite from families and children is in the bar- avoid the 'club' too. If you drink, be prepared to be carded if you are over 21. And expect to see kids as young as 16 order drinks at the bar and not be carded, despite their signs and policy that they don't serve anyone under 21.

All I can think of atm. Any questions?

  • Oh yeah...buy all the rum you can! I don't even drink, but I schlepped the stuff all over the Caribbean and gave out as gifts....they deliver right to the ship and you won't see it till you dock back home.

I'm not really sure how duty free works, but I plan on looking into it.

Are the alcohol prices worse than say, living in Chicago? Are we looking at ballpark prices or just high prices for a bar?

I went on a cruise a few months ago (Carnival). Ordered a bucket of Budweiser. Their idea of a bucket is 4 - 16 ounce beers. They add gratuity/tax onto it. It was $38.

    So ballpark prices.

  • The fiance and I emptied 2 bottles of mouthwash and filled them with vodka. Don't do that (unless you like mouthwash-flavored vodka). However, I would suggest you figure out an ingenious/hidden way of sneaking your own booze aboard (I think they let you bring a few bottles of wine).

Do they look through your luggage or something?

They supposedly inspect your luggage for "contraband." Who knows. I would hope they check bags in case some guy wanted to bring along a little c-4 or something.

  • Are you going with any kids? Because if you are don't let them buy soda or any of the drinks you have to pay for! There are free drinks all around in drink fountains like fruit punch, lemonade, ice tea and other drinks but they get you by asking if you want a soda and charge it to your room for like 5 dollars a can! I went to Cozumel 2 years ago I think, it was an alright place but we did the snorkeling excursion and it was awesome! We got on a little bus and drove about 45 min to this awesome hidden place and snorkeled for around 3-4 hours and they provided free drinks and beer. We also went zip lining, not sure if it was in Honduras or Grand Cayman, but that was also a blast. We booked our excursions through the TV in our rooms and I suggest you look at all the options and different excursions and pick some out early because once they are filled up they are gone. Also bring bigger pants and belts because you are going to pack on some pounds with the free ice cream and mid night buffets.

  • i snuck in a few handles last cruise.... also beers are about 5 bucks for a budweiser so not terrible. i would always get hammered off the boat so i didnt have to drink as much on.

Randomly...if they catch it they will remove it. It also adds to the weight limit....

If you buy liquor on board it's cheap as sh*t. And 2 liters per person is duty free, but every time we've claimed more than that they've never asked us to pay taxes on it so I'm not sure I would even admit to having more than allowed.

And honestly I remember paying something like $5 for a Bud Light unless you get the bucket when it was 4 for 16 i think.

Oh, if you like Hold 'Em Poker, then most ships have an electronic table for playing with up to like 10 people- but they take like .25 in ante every hand, plus like 10% of the final chip total per hand? I think that was it...anyway, don't play unless the table is full or else you won't win enough to justify playing considering how much they take per hand.

I've done that before...but we washed out the bottle before adding the vodka.

I prefer my vodka to taste like vodka :D

We washed the ones we took like 3 or 4 times. Still tasted like mouthwash...

  • Go on two cruises a year. Bucket of beer is 28, drinks are 7.25, put alcohol in water bottles and put in luggage, they don't search your bags. I know use my hunten bag last year and while unpacking found a box of shotgun shells. At the ports go to the all inclusive places. 40-60 bucks and it's all you can eat and drink while on the beach and most have pools. Anything else you need ask me
