  • I'm 25 and been on/off with school since I graduated high school. I just finished up at a CC and now headed to The University of Maine. I live in Alabama and have never been up there. Can anyone give me some insight on Maine? And any of you guys or girls work in Forestry?

  • Good luck with school man. My wife and I recently explored Maine last fall and loved it. We stayed in York Harbor, which is gorgeous. York Harbor is at the southern most tip of Maine too. We love all the antique shops, light houses, old buildings, etc. We're hoping to get up there this summer, if our schedules allow us to. Just up the road from YH, in a town called Wells, is the Maine Diner. I'd highly recommend it. Guy Fieri, who hosts the Food Network show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives visited there...the lobster casserole is to die for! We didn't really go too far inland when we went up, we stayed mostly along the coast.

Thanks. The University is located in the central part of Maine(Orono, Maine). I would love to try all these cool eateries but will be on limited funds. Although, I can't wait to do some outdoor activities.

True. I actually live in Auburn and was planning on going to AU but I got accepted into Maine with a partial scholarship. My gf goes to AU now. Its gonna be weird not being around football on Saturdays. Better get use to Hockey.

I'm sure Maine holds GSU under 300 yards rushing like we did??? Ha. I might pull a Brandon Weeden and walk on the team. I'm from Alabama and have SEC speed.

Haha cool. I doubt they need too many 6 foot 165 pound LBs. Although, it is Maine. I might have a chance. I'll have to check my eligibility though. HA biggrin

I am from Alabama originally, but currently live in NH not far from the Maine border. It's a beautiful area, especially in the fall. Start buying your winter gear now though and prepare yourself to do a ton of snow removal.

I manage the FSC certification for a few dozen companies from Maine to Georgia, it's not forestry but the two are linked. What are you interested in doing?

Wells is nice, but Kennebunkport and Ogunquit are the better spots in that area. If you come up this summer, eat at The Front Porch in Ogunquit, it's the best in the area.

Yea I can't wait to get up there. I need to update my entire wardrobe. I'm really open to anything related to Forestry. Whether its working for the government, working for a national park or a private timber company. How long have you live up there. I would love to ask a lot more questions?

    Thanks

  • I'm originally from Bama but the Navy stationed me in Brunswick, ME for 14 years. The base was recently shut down and it was devastating for everyone I know that was stationed there. Unfortunately I now find myself in the Hampton Roads, VA area for the rest of my career. The plan is definitely to move back to Maine when we retire in a few. Here are some of my thoughts. The analogy that I like to use about living in Maine is that it's like living in the 50's...
    1) No crime
    2) Beautiful weather 9 months out of the year (summers in Maine are incredible)
    3) Unlimited outdoor fun
    4) Chain restaurants are in the minority, not to mention lobster rolls available at select McDonald's biggrin
    5) Everything is done locally (I'll revisit this in negatives). Count on everything you do or buy is done with great care and quality.
    6) Everyone is extremely nice. They won't fake it though...if they don't like you, they'll be upfront. I LOVE THAT.

    On the negative side:
    1) January - March
    2) High Taxes
    3) Don't ask for directions from 'locals'...they will purposely get you lost. It's a game and they take delight in it.
    4) You will forever be called an "out-a-stater"...this is not a term of endearment. Other than being born there, not sure how you officially become a Mainer, and they won't tell you either. Just accept it.
    5) NO ONE gives 2 shats about college football. Red Sox and Patriots, and that's it.
    6) Women...cold winters are not conducive to hotness. BMW is the acronym, you'll figure it out when you go to your first bar.

When you cross the state line, there's a sign that says "Welcome to Maine...the way life should be". That pretty much sums it up. You're going to love it. Hope this helps.

Appreciate the information. After reading everyone's thoughts on Maine. I'm ready to go. The only downside is college football. Hopefully some other students will be an avid fan like myself.

I moved here in the summer of 08 and have reached the point where I miss home, to be honest.

This area is excellent if it is the life you want to live, but I miss my life in Alabama. No matter what ANYONE tells you, life here is very different. The culture, people, environment, weather, etc....if you can think of it, it's probably different here. I'm a southern girl at heart and moving was excellent for me when I made the decision, but I've come to agree that there really is 'no place like home'.

That's not to rag on New England, it's a really incredible place and there are a million positives about living in this area. It's just a personal decision and no one can tell you one way or another, you have to make that call on your own.

Anyway, feel free to ask me anything and I'll try to answer your questions or point you in the right direction.
