OT: Iconic skier's death points out U.S. health gap

Proof? I bet you there is not a piece of clothing or equipment that she used that she didn't get paid for. She won skiing competitions all over the world and I'm sure you get paid for those. Not saying she made 500k or anything like that but I would bet big money she stood to make at least 100k in year.

I don't have proof, but many successful Canadian Olympic athlete's and world champions make shit all. Sara Burke was essentially a nobody, she certainly wasn't making significant endorsement money in Canada.

So give me an example of someone more famous than her that makes less than 100k. She was the most popular woman's X-Games skier. I know that isn't a huge sport, but definitely big enough for sponsors to want to sponsor her. I'm sure she got paid to use skis, bindings, boots, poles, gloves, clothes, goggles, etc. She won competitions all over the world. Skiing is an expensive and very popular sport and manufactures make billions a year.

Why would her family have gone bankrupt? She was 29 years old, it was her debt. Didn't see anything suggesting that parents were dumb enough to guarantee it. Sure, it was a debt of her estate, but if she had assets to pay, they should pay.

Excellent point. But don't let facts get in the way of this writer's attempt at guilt tripping us into throwing away more of our liberties and feeling good about doing it. After all, government run programs are the answer to all of our problems...

Any Canadian Womens Hockey player. No one really cares about female sports.

From someone who is in Canada, she is not famous here. I watch more or as much sports as anyone I know, still had never heard of this chick until her accident.

No one cares about the x-games here really, at least TSN (our ESPN equivalent) doesn't ever really talk about it.

She may have made decent money, but let's not paint the picture she was rolling in it. She is a female athlete who frigging ski's in a sport that had not yet made an appearance in the olympics.

That 500k for Vonn was more than her male counterpart and didn't include endorsements.

  • Hockey player? Womens hockey players are not even on the same playing field as skiiers. Skiing is a worldwide sport. Also, in 2008 the prize purse for winter x games was 3 mill. I'm sure the winner of womens super pipe made a decent clip that year.

Also, X Game is where its at in terms of these sports. Not relevant that its not in the olympics.

Sad. Without help from her fans, this girls family might have had to file for bankruptcy in order to pay her medical bills.

What about the truly poor in the U.S.? Half of Americans live at or below the poverty line. Is it right that they can't afford to go to the doctor or hospital?

50% of Americans do not live at or below poverty line
It's unfortunate what happened to this young lady

I'm from Canada. I had never heard of Sara Burke until she died. She might have made a decent living, but highly doubtful it was 6 figures. Canadian Olympic athletes make nothing, that's why Canada is so shit at sports, we don't invest in sports.

So I have a Canadian neighbor here on a work visa married to an Aussie. They put out their Maple Leaf flag when she died. So there you have it.....his feelings cancel out yours or vice versa. The fact remains that winter sports are Canada's equivalent of football (American style).

And to another poster's point about the article using this exception as an argument for health care.....here's another take. Crazy how things can be spun.

Burke's agent Michael Spencer had launched a $550,000 US fundraising effort to help cover the freestyle skier's outstanding medical costs and other related expenses, following her death in Utah on Thursday, raising speculation the family was facing a massive bill for her hospitalization because the skier was not adequately insured.

On Friday afternoon, Spencer released a statement saying the family has not yet received a final bill from the University of Utah Hospital where she was treated, but it is expected to be approximately $200,000.

"Once charges are finalized, the University will work with Health Canada to determine what type of coverage may be available and what their contribution will be, as Sarah is a Canadian citizen," said the statement.

While it remains unclear if Burke was properly insured, the website started by Spencer had raised more than $194,000 by Friday afternoon. The fundraiser's beneficiary is listed as Burke's husband, Rory Bushfield.

Spencer said Burke's family was extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from the public, her sponsors, and the hospital.
    Unsanctioned event

Peter Judge, CEO of the Canadian Freestyle Skiing Association, says its athletes have excellent insurance when they are competing for the association, but said Burke was not covered by the program because her accident happened during an unsanctioned event.

"She was in the U.S. taking part in a third-party training opportunity, something that was separate to our program," said Judge.

"The Canadian Snow Sports Association has a very comprehensive policy which covers these kinds of situations, but unfortunately in this instance she was involved in a third party event which was not part of the program and as such was not under the umbrella of coverage," said Judge.

Burke was in Park City training for a superpipe event hosted by Monster Energy, one of her main sponsors, at the time of the accident.

So, in recap......They don't even have a bill yet, don't know if she actually had any coverage, have yet to determine if any coverage is possible, but a US fundraising effort was started and has earned an amount estimated to be well over the eventual bill. The extra money will be used to pay for funeral costs and a memorial fund and her husband, a Canadian citizen and able bodied as well. Canadian Snow Sports DOES have a comprehensive policy but she wasn't covered at this event. She was participating because one of her main sponsors was hosting. Anyone else think that Monster Energy could afford to foot that bill? Only in America.

No it's not. How are you some random American trying to tell me how Canadians view sports?

Hockey is the equivalent of American Football.

In terms of Sports hierarchy of popularity it goes:

    Hockey
    Hockey
    Hockey

    American Football
    Canadian Football

    Basketball
    Baseball

    Others.

Canadian's don't love watching all these winter sports because it's cold here. Plenty of Canadians would prefer warm weather, we aren't some weird country that loves winter regardless of what those terrible beer adds say.

Random American.....lol. No different than a random Canadian.

Hockey is a winter sport last time I checked. It's clearly number one but my point was really to emphasize that skiing and other Alpine events are big whether you knew who Sarah Burke was or not.

Nobody said Canada was weird. I do find this story interesting to say the least. A US fund gets set up to raise money for an as yet undetermined amount, ends up raising more than necessary, and insurance may still be applied even though Canada's sports agency carries coverage for sanctioned events but not this one.......which was sponsored by Sarah's biggest endorsement sponsor, Monster Drinks.

I live in Canada, I get a more accurate of what sports Canadians like. After all, I am surrounded by Canadians.

Skiing and snowboarding are popular activities in terms of participation, not in terms of watching on TV, or paying to watch events.

Downhill, Super G, Slalom skiing might occasionally be on CBC (government funded TV) but rarely if ever, would whatever sport Sara Burke did be on TV.

So I guess Sarah was a Canadian who made a living and a dying on the American dime. Not directed at you by any means but perhaps the story writer and OP could acknowledge the gap is between their ears and not in the US health system.

I did just look it up and it appears that TSN will be airing 16 hours of coverage to the Winter X games starting this Thursday and additionally will air 24 hours of consecutive coverage dedicated to the career of Sarah Burke.....not much at all I guess.

Yeh 24 hours now because she is dead. Funny how our culture works, you die and instantly you get a lot more press then ever before.

So there are 16 hours for x-games, that's less then 1/366th of this years potential air time.

Trust me. Sara Burke was not a very famous athlete, Canadians are much more likely to know any hockey player, star football player, basketball player etc... over Sarah Burke.

EDIT: BTW I am sticking out of this health care issue, because it's gotten me nothing but insults in the past. My point is strictly about Burke's income, and popularity within Canada.

Well there would have to be 24 hours of accomplishments to air. It's not like she did much since the accident. And you can spin any way you like but these X games only occur in the Winter months so now you have increased their coverage percentage to almost one full day out of less than one week of competition. 1/7 isn't too shabby for rarely, if ever.

I'm not saying she isn't a great athlete, just saying no one who isn't some outdoorsy person cares or knows who she is. The majority of Canadians have never ever seen Sarah Burke preform, and a fair amount wouldn't know her name (until she died).

Want to talk spin? The x-games are being shown on TSN (which is the free channel) 4 hours TOTAL. Those hours are from 11 PM to 1 AM. That speaks volumes about their popularity. The other 12 hours is on TSN2 which is a channel that isn't on any basic cable package.

Also it's not even being shown live, you really showed me how popular this stuff is. lol

Monster energy and the event site have plenty of insurance... Most likely they have coverage that goes beyond liability.

I used to throw events and the venue and I would have had enough to cover an accident. Not to say monster or the venue want to file a claim...

I apologize, slightly different wording is necessary.

1/6 Americans lives BELOW the poverty line, but another 1/3 are 'low income' families who make less than $45,000 a year for a family of four.

So this statement would be accurate: half of America is poor.

Half of America is officially poor — RT

While it’s no surprise that nearly 50 million Americans live below the poverty line, new statistics from the US Census show that almost 100 million others are counted as low-income citizens, making half of the population of America officially poor.
