OT: Political Help Please

  • Is it possible to be a conservative AND want separation of church and state?

I'm not fond of hippie liberals or extremely religious people (Huckabee).

    Thanks.

P.S. I like most of what Ron Paul stood for.

  • Yes. Don't feel the need to be categorized or labeled.

  • Thanks guys. I've also never voted because I'm not familiar enough with the politicians or I just don't like their platform. I need to do some research I guess.

My girlfriend's family are huge Obama supporters. My family is pretty much republican all the way. Both are nuts if ya ask me.

  • It's called being an individual, you're more than welcome to endorse abortion, states rights, gun bans, and prayer in school all at the same time if you so choose. Don't let others tell you what you are.

I was raised in a big, catholic family...

However I'm pro-choice, for birth control, against welfare, screw crazy foreign relations (we give Israel waaaay too much money each year), want more strict gun laws, against Obamacare, against unemployment and crazy government aid, etc.

My views match up to both parties. That's why I'm so damn confused. shrug

You're an indepedent and you SHOULD NOT pledge allegiance to either party.

Nobody should IMO. If for no other reason then you get less junk mail and phone calls.

Or get twice as much junk mail...

I'm almost exactly the same, technically I lined up with Jill Scott(green party) but in todays politics an independent vote is a republican vote so I had to give it to Barry again.

You won't believe how many people told me that my vote for Gary Johnson (whom I thought was the best candidate and I was voting for my chosen candidate; you know, the entire point of the voting process) was nothing but a waste and in the end a "vote for Obama." Slaves to the two party system will get you at every turn.

  • The way I see it, I'm conservative with issues that effect me and I'm liberal when it comes to minding my own fucking business shrug

Maybe I wouldn't be comfortable aborting my own child or suddenly becoming gay...but why should I be concerned with what others do? My biggest problem with the established republican party today is that it's all individual/states rights, guns, if I want lead in my paint so be it, 'MERICA!!, etc. but once people have a choice issue they don't like it's a sin and should be banned at the federal level.

You must have very conservative friends. I know just finishing my poli sci degree means I'm nowhere near the level as some of the older people on tBB(including some attorneys) but just from a demographic standpoint the independent vote is 'USUALLY' that 18-34 with degrees of higher education...which is always heavily democratic. Anybody telling you your vote was "for Obama" is either heavily misinformed or are actively trying to sway you.

I have no problem with someone voting for the candidate they think is best, regardless of who it is. However, I was extremely disheartened to hear from a number of these people that they (a) didn't even know who Gary Johnson was and (b) wouldn't vote for an independent regardless.

It's very disheartening. The majority of people usually vote "full ticket" and don't even bother 'voting'. If people vote for POTUS based on what others tell them imagine how even less informed their "full tickets" votes are for local gov't positions which will effect them even more than the president. It's a toxic cycle with no end in sight.

  • Fiscally conservative, but all over the map socially. Would never vote for a Republican that wants to use the office to push their religous agenda, but would never vote for a Dem peroid. Also would never vote for a racist or homophobe. Which means I don't have a lot of people to vote for.

The fact that you phrase it that way goes to show how the rise of fake-conservatism has distorted things. Trust me, real conservatism is the mind your own business ideology.

Finish the post you quoted to see that I acknowledge the hypocrisy. Reagan defined 'conservatism' as a stool with 3 pillars holding it up, all as equally important as the other, no politician qualities under those guidelines and most conservatives only count for 1 these days.

Out of curiosity, would it be fairer to call you a pro-choice, pro-gay marriage conservative?

One of the pillars of the Republican party platform is maintaining marriage as strictly between one man and one woman.

I agree with you. I wish we could do away with the whole republican and democrat crap. Do you think that the strong emergence of a third party would bring some much needed balance to our system?
