OT- Rank These Special Forces Units

  • Delta Force
    SEAL Team 6
    MARSOC
    Army Rangers
    Army Special Forces (Green Berets)
    Marine Recon
    Paratrooper Recon Team
    Special Activities Division ("The Activity")

    From best to worst IYO....

  • They all do different things

Delta is the hardest to get into, followed by SEALS and then Recon Marines and Green Berets

So i guess it would be

    1- Delta
    2- SEALs
    3- Recon
    4- Green Beret

The rest could be debated for hours with no real answer

Also SEAL team 6 is just a part of the SEALs, kind of like the Delta Force of the SEALs.... same responsibilities really as regular SEALs

The Air Force rescue units are pretty badass imo, I always liked those nerds and they get some cool missions... ones you can really be proud of is you succeed

Good points. I didn't know where to put the Pararescue guy. He's a bad ass no doubt, but it's a little different. I've been doing a ton or reading on Green Berets lately when they were MACV- SOG in Vietnam. Those guys used to be the baddest SOB's in the valley. Delta Force was spawned from Operation Leaping Lenna and they moved down a little. But Delta was basically a LRRP MACV- SOG Green Beret Recon Unit. The Special Activities Division is CIA and is made up of intelligence operators and ex Delta and SEAL Team 6 operators. They bad.

Word, they are all pretty badass for the most part

    It really depends

Delta is without question the hardest to get into inside the standard military

They are the only one that doesn't even allow applications, they have to choose you

Their unit was shut down due to excessive civilian causalities and renamed MARSOC. They have to prove themselves first. I'm not saying they aren't bad, but I'll take a light infantry regiment over them. Unless we are doing a snatch and grab type thing. Then by all means, send in the sociopaths. Plus, they finally got their seat at the table in JSOC (SOCOM) after complaining enough.

Ha I hear you on them being crazy, but they aren't as worthless or crazy as you make them out to be

I know very well, and more than you no offense

I understand you clearly read and research this stuff, but Marines SF and Army SF outside of the Berets are a major difference in terms of what they are capable of

Rangers are almost not even SF imo, they are just slightly more trained infantry

They are. They are basically a special forces infantry division. They don't go out in small teams and do operations usually. But most Delta operators come from the 75th Ranger regiment.

Green Berets used to kinda be top dog til the end of NAM. They have to be up there. Their role and what they do though is much different than the rest. They are not a search and destroy type unit. They basically train militia to help with overthrows of the government.

Agreed, Green Berets still get a high measure of respect as far as Im aware

Not sure where you are getting this info of Delta Operators coming from the 75th Ranger Regiment

Im not gonna say that is untrue but most of Delta's stats aren't known publicly and as far as I know they draft from all over the military and if I had to guess I would imagine most of them come from the SEALs and Green Berets

The Rangers are the largest in numbers though so mathematically it adds up I suppose

  • FWIW, they now call DELTA and ST6 guys just operators. Apparently, they work on small 5 man search and destroy teams (for the activity) together that is mixed from both units. So instead of getting them confused, they just say "operator". Like the guy is a machine that the government built or something. I guess their training is so close that they compliment each other well.

Eric Haney, the author who wrote the Delta Force Book said that I believe. It's on wiki.

LRRP teams in Vietnam were badass. Use to read up on that stuff, but then I joined the military. Army Rangers would be last on any list, by the way.

Won't rank ST6 as they are a sub-set of a service. Never heard of Paratrooper Recon Team, I assume you meant ParaRescue Jumpers (PJs or Maroon Beret from USAF). You forgot Delta and SAD don't belong on the same list, unless you are writing a movie. On top of that, as said above, they tend to have different primary missions (and resources) although in a pinch all can do the others job for the most part. That said,

    Seals
    Delta
    Recon
    Green Berets
    MARSOC
    Rangers
    PJs.

BTW, Seals, Delta, Recon, Green Beret, MARSOC and PJs all typically operate in tiny units. Rangers tend to operate as larger units. I also may be biased, but I view the PJs as medics who happen to carry weapons...as opposed to what I'd call "true operators."

Edit: If I were a bad guy, I wouldn't phvk with any of them.

    Good stuff

And while I'm not sure they still have them today, RECON units were a part of of the 101st Airborne Division They were specifically called Tiger Force in one battalion (battalion is right I think) and were the "Hawks" in 2nd. I can't remember the 3rd's name. I know Tiger Force was shut down after Nam, but it was back up as late as 2007. Whether or not it's still active, I don't know. It was a pretty exclusive club. They took the best of the 101st and made them Recon. I believe they said of the 900+ men, 45 were inducted into Recon 1st battalion.

They were the first LRP units that were search and destroy. They would actively seek out the enemy while other LRP and LRRP units would try and hide. 45 men strong, they worked into 4 teams of 10-13. They were asked to do things 200+ Paratroopers were asked to do. They have a very high death ratio in Nam but were one of the more decorated platoons in the history of the military. Outside of the guys in MACV-SOG going "over the fence" each day, they were put int he most dangerous situations in all of the war. These guys were dropped into hell and left for 2 weeks at a time. Crazy stuff.

    What exactly does Delta do?

All kinds of things, they are bound by nothing for the most part

The ARMY doesn't even admit they exist

In Black Hawk Down ( which is the most I have ever read on them on top of seeing the movie ) was a mission where their task was to gather info on a target in preparation for arrest of that target

in this case a Somali warlord was their target, Rangers provided their protection/cover along with Helicopters gunships

So that is one form of what they would be asked to do

When they retire many of them enter the private sector and continue doing covert work

But as far as what they do it varies, they are normally called on when its important

Save american hostages overseas, gather intelligence from sensitive locations, killing a bad guy like Escobar ?.... they can do it all

    2. SAS/SEALs
    3. Everyone else, flip a coin

An ex SEAL I work with told me once that the biggest difference between SEALs and Delta is in a room full of military personnel you could pick out all the SEALs 9/10 times and the D guys almost never.

Yep. Check out the guy in this pic on the far right in the white shirt proving security. He's Delta but looks like he should be behind a CPU.
