OT - Recommend for me post-apocolyptic and/or dystopian books

Hey gang. My favorite genre of book to read is post-apocolyptic and dystopian. I also love nuclear holocaust fiction. Please recommend your favorites to me, followed by a short description of why you like it. No spoilers, please. Here are just a few of my favorites (and, I admit, I am not ashamed that I'm sometimes apt to venture to the YA section of a bookstore):

It just doesn't get any better than 1984 for me. I was absolutely mesmerized when i read it the first time.

The Passage: It's post apocolyptic, when reading it you get the feeling that it could really happen. It also is a heart felt story that has a little bit of everything.

I dont love all King but the stand is great. Loved miniseries too but book kills that!

The Road was the last post-apocalyptic book I read, and the one I immediately thought of. But I see you already listed that. Love that book, the movie, unsurprisingly, didn't come close to how powerful the book was.

Yeah i am a giant dark tower fan also. One of the best works of fiction in history imho.

Years a go I read a book called Lucifer's Hammer about a post comet strike apocalyptic world.
Don't remember the author(s). Not great literature but it was a page turner.

Liked Deathgate alot when I was a kid, problem is it might be a little YA. Fun series and very heavy on the fantasy. Lots of magic and no real ties to anything considered current earth.

Maybe Cradle of Saturn, forget the author. It wasn't great but dealt with Earth getting destroyed. More of a disaster book really and I wouldn't say it was great, just ok.
If you don't mind far future SF Alastair Reynolds has some stuff that might interest you. Terminal World feels very post apoctalyptic though I don't think it actually takes place on Earth. And some of his other stuff is so far future it deals with the human race basicly fighting for survival and not necessarily succeeding. One of my favorite authors but possibly not what you are looking for.
Terry Brooks Shannara stuff is fantasy post apoctalyptic but YA and awfully dated and not really that great.

Not a big fan of the genre but I dabble. I like the grateful dead a lot and heard that one of their famous tunes morning dew was written based on On the beach. So I read the book and liked it. Realistic . I also kind of liked that movie with will smith and his dog (legend?)
