OT: Road Trip Help

  • Driving to Maine in a few weeks. I will be leaving from Birmingham,Alabama. I want to make a scenic trip out of this. I will be hitting the main cities on the way. (Washington DC, New York City, Boston).

For each of these major cities, where are places to stay on the out skirts of each city? I can't afford to stay one night in each downtown city.

My plan is to drive straight to DC from Birmingham but not stay in Downtown, I would like to stay a few miles away(cheaper prices and less headache) however, I do not know what are safe areas are. I believe along hwy 95.

Second, Drive from DC to NYC... Again, do not want to stay downtown rather somewhere off the interstate before the city.

Third, NYC to Boston... Same thing, stay somewhere before getting into Downtown Boston.

My plan is to drive on the interstate, stay somewhere relatively cheap then wake up early and hang out in each city the entire day. Then move on to the next city until I get to Maine. I just don't want to pay a crap ton staying in the downtown portions of these cities. I'm looking for a Hotel off the interstate before each city. I just don't want to stay in the Ghetto.

    Thanks

  • All I can say is enjoy the drive through Virginia on highway 81 (it is hell) I would suggest staying outside DC. (Fairfax county area), get up early to beat the traffic (if that's possible). Be sure to have plenty of cash for the tolls through B-more to Philly. Just go to expedia or hotwire and find a hampton inn or something for cheap.

Yea I'm just looking for a cheap hotel outside each city. I just have no clue where decent places to stay off the interstate are?

DC is about a 10 hour drive from B-ham did it a couple of years ago. Not going to find much around the DC area for less than 75 unless your in the College park area (no idea how nice that area is)

I'm just looking for something cheap off the interstate. I just want to be able to wake up early an drive an hour or two and be in each downtown area... spend the day and move on. I just don't want to play it by ear once I get on the road. I would like to get a few names of areas before each major city.

This is my plan. But when I go to hotels.com or expedia... Then type in the major citiy, it only gives you that surrounding area which is only a few miles. I just want to know the names of a few cities in between that will be cheap and safe... TIA

  • You can stay up closer to Baltimore and still visit DC (or both cities), snce its cheaper. They are that close. From my house I can get to Baltimore in 25 minutes and Washington in 45. Often very convenient.

  • There are plenty of places in Philly if you don't skip it.

  • College Park is a good option since it's right next to 95 and it has a metro stop. Tons of hotels there too. There is a Holiday Inn right of I-95 a bit north of the campus.

Is College Park before or after DC?

Oh ok. Well do you have any suggestions before DC. Really don't want to back track.

Northern Virginia, but that's a very expensive area. there is a holiday inn express in Woodbridge, a suburb. Is that too far?
