OT: Scientists Link End of Last Ice Age to Increase in CO2

  • Sooo increases in CO2 contributed to global warming and a rise in temperatures that ended the last ice age.

As more and more CO2 is released by our use of fossil fuels and global temperatures increase, when will the doubters realize we are greatly contributing to the warming of our planet?

Ice age data bolsters greenhouse gas, warming link - Yahoo! News

From Yahoo! News: The dramatic temperature increases that thawed the last ice age followed spikes in carbon dioxide levels in the air, a new study finds. Researchers say that further strengthens the scientific case explaining current man-made global warming.

If Day After Tomorrow holds true,Alabama should be safe from the crazy ice,but then we have to take into all those Yankees.

How was there an increase in CO2 at the end of the ice age? Did man cause this rise.

Warming of the planet? How is it possible to have the coolest February worldwide since 1994? How was this winter/summer cooler worldwide than the last 3 years?

The article explains the rise in CO2 at the end of the ice age- and I never said man caused it.

I'm linking the fact that CO2 caused the end of that ice age to the fact that increases in CO2 now by man are contributing to global warming today.

So: as CO2 increased then and increased temperatures, increases in CO2 now, as contributed to greatly by man, is increasing temperature now.

    Make more sense?

  • Penn State University professor Richard Alley and others called this a significant advance in studies about past climate change and carbon dioxide, saying "this may be of help in explaining things out in the sound-bite world."

In other words let's use this to justify the unnecessary hysteria over a naturally occurring cycle of climate change that occurs over eons. Other studies by equally if not superior scientific groups have come to the conclusion that man's "carbon footprint" is ant like in comparison to nature's own doings.

If you really feel threatened buy some of Al Gore's carbon credits to salve your guilt.

Well in addition to millions of cars that contribute to CO2, let's not forget we are cutting down forests and in particular rainforests, that cut down on CO2 in the atmosphere.

Also, in feeding ourselves we raise animals that contribute to CO2 production- like cows.

Finally, scientists that don't believe in global warming are by far in the minority so let's not pretend like they are superior to the majority that acknowledge how we contribute to global warming.

Also, most of thosie scientists who don't have been linked to funding received by conservative groups that want to push 'climate change' rather than global warming because it would hurt corporations and the rich to have to be more environmentally friendly.

  • go look at global temperature trends that show the effect of that volcano in 1991 and then the El Nino in 1998...it dwarfs anything ever claimed to be caused by man/industry/etc.

  • How much is man made co2 contributing? 25%? .0000000001%? if we don't know, how do we know we can impact global warming by more than 1/1000th of 1% over the next 100 years?

So it's coincidental that: The concentrations of CO2 and methane have increased by 36% and 148% respectively since 1750.[50] These levels are much higher than at any time during the last 800,000 years, the period for which reliable data has been extracted from ice cores.

In other words, since the Industrial Revolution those numbers have increased dramatically, whereas the previous 800,000 years they were relatively stable?

I realize the troll but the biggest worries about global warming come from:

    A) the increase in diseases that won't be as killed off during warmer winters
    B) changing weather patterns that can lead to more destructive storms

At least in the near (100 years) future.

  • I'm of the belief that climate is cyclical and the effect humanity has upon the climate is minute at best. To this point I have yet to see any scientific study that does any more than "suggest" or "imply" and that just isn't enough to convince me.

Minute until we became industrial and starting burning fossil fuels at a rate not a single person could have imagined even in 1900.

Owning pets and the cattle industry contribute more of these emissions than cars.

Oceanic algae converts most of the world's CO2 to O2, not trees.

That does not mean I support mass deforestation and inefficient automobiles.

You wanna contribute? Eat local food and stop using plastic, rubber, pharmaceuticals. Yes, a lot of pharmaceuticals utilize derivatives of petroleum.

So we all should just die and leave the planet to "deserving species"?

You have the Peta-Greenpeace-Friends of the Earth party line down pat. Guilty people love to wear the hairshirt and preach doomsday scenarios.

Okay let's be realistic. There are fringe groups on both sides.

I'm not saying we should all lay down and die so mother earth can live or that we should allow millions of people to die to reduce greenhouse gas emission.

But there are definite steps we should take to curb CO2 output.

Actually there was an article a couple weeks ago addressing issues with..I believe it was oceanic algae...

    I'll try to find it.

Don't be like that. If you don't believe in God it's not really arguable that a sane, non-egocentric line of thinking would lead you to believe its in the Earth's best interest for humans to die off.

I bet it's a study about decreases in tropical areas where the water is already warm.

Meanwhile other scientists and private enterprises can mass produce it via replicating natural means in studies to use it as alternative fuel sources and/or atmospheric filtration devices.
